Easter Liturgy
The tradition of sharing our Holy Week celebration with St Joseph’s College to remember the significance of Easter continued this year.
Once again, the ERC was packed with students, and staff from both Colleges. This was a solemn ceremony of prayer, song, and drama.
The Passion of Christ is followed by witnessing the Stations of the Cross. Our Year 10 and 12 students were outstanding in presenting the final days of Jesus.
The musicians on the day, under the guidance of the music staffs from both Colleges produced brilliant performances and created a great atmosphere in the hall. Congratulations to all the students who prepared so thoroughly for this wonderful community event.
A final thank you to all who contributed to the most important liturgical event on the Christian calendar.

The Fathering Project
Hello fathers, father figures, significant role models and carers
As we draw to the end of Term 1, we have the opportunity to take a bit of a breather as we embark on Easter Break. Holiday periods are always a great time to pause and spend quality time with family and even get the chance to make a greater connection. We are constantly learning about our children, even when we think we aren’t learning anything because we are frustrated by them. Take this time to reflect on your relationship with your children and try to understand what may be happening for them. Here is some information on what happens with adolescents and their emotions. Please take time to read and absorb and perhaps put into action.
Emotions
Emotions often run high during adolescence due to all the restructuring in the brain and hormones interacting in this process. While there is more activity in the emotional sections of the brain (the limbic system) there is also disruption in the planning and impulse control parts of the brain (the frontal lobes and the prefrontal cortex). A Day in the Life of St Edward’s
Nearly 200 Year 6 boys from across the coast were welcomed by the College attending a 'Day in the Life' where they experienced hands on learning activities.
The boys had the opportunity to engage in Science, Music, French, Art, Woodwork and PDHPE. The Leaders of Learning who led each of the activities, were supported by our aspiring student leaders from Year 10. A great day was had by all.
Testimonial: The students of St Patrick’s had a fantastic day. The teachers were fantastic. I would also like to personally thank the Year 10 boys who led our students around for the day. They were awesome, respectful and energetic. Such wonderful examples of outstanding students at St Edward’s. Maths Week
Maths Week was held again this year at St Edward's College, with celebrations taking place throughout Week 6, aligning with International Pi Day on 14 March. Throughout the Week, various activities and initiatives were offered, exposing the boys to the wide world of mathematics.
Inquisitive Minds
On Tuesday of Week 6, the College invited Inquisitive Minds to come in and run sessions with all of Year 8. Inquisitive Minds is a hands-on, engaging workshop, where the boys are able to compete in problem solving challenges in groups, while learning important skills that can benefit them in the classroom along the way. It was great to see so many boys completely immersed and engaged in the activities throughout the day. The workshops were assisted throughout the day by Year 10 leaders, who did a fantastic job in ensuring everything ran smoothly. A special thank you to Mr Marks, who coordinated the running of the day – it was very well organised, resulting in its success!
Art Competition
Year 8 Art classes joined in the Maths Week fun again this year, creating cityscape artworks based on the digits of Pi. Over the week some great artworks were produced and five of the best were chosen to receive prizes – Congratulations to Luka Coughlan-Berg, Max Young, Callum Griffin, Harry Call and Reid Spokes. A big thank you to the Art staff for running the Pi Cityscapes Art competition and joining in on the Maths Week fun!
Football Kicking Competition

This year the Academic Portfolio came up with a new Maths Week initiative – a football kicking competition. A number of teachers and students nominated themselves to compete in the competition. Competitors had to kick a rugby league ball off a tee three times, with the distances measured each time. Students from the College were given the opportunity to submit their estimates for who would kick the longest and how far each teacher and student would kick on average. Prizes would be awarded to the students with the closest estimates.
Unfortunately, due to the non-stop rain we have had for the past couple of months, we had to postpone the competition for a later date.
Thank you to the Academic Portfolio, Mrs Abbott-Atchison and Mr Rozario for their work in planning this activity!
Assembly and Pi Recital

The celebration of Maths Week concluded on Friday 11 March, with the College assembly taking on a maths theme. This year’s assembly took on a more interactive approach with the audience being asked various brainteasers and receiving rewards for correct answers. It was fantastic to see so many students getting involved!
During the assembly the College was also treated to the annual Pi Recital in which students from various years battled to recall Pi to the most number of decimal places possible. This year saw the highest number of competitors we’ve had since the initiation of the Pi Recital and it was another exciting battle that kept the whole assembly on the edge of their seats. Much to the shock of the audience, 2021 Champion and Year 10 student Kai Maitland was knocked off by two incredible Year 7 students, who ended up reciting 120 digits of Pi. The eventual winner of the Pi Recital was Josh Saul, with Max Klein-Schiphorst coming in second place. A huge congratulations goes out to both these Year 7 students as well as everyone else involved!
Thank you to all the staff and students who were involved in Maths Week 2022, in particular Mrs Abbott-Atchison, Mr Rozario and the Academic Portfolio for all of their efforts in the design and implementation of the activities throughout the week.

Year 9 Pop-Up Museum
In Week 8, our Year 8 History Students created a Pop-Up Museum of Viking artefacts that they had created themselves.
The resulting museum was filled with quality artefacts and descriptions that gave wide insight into Viking life. Objects included shields, axes, jewellery, and models of longhouses and longships. Museum descriptions told our viewers what the objects were, how they were made, where they were made and found and what this reveals about Viking life.
Congratulations to Year 8 on such excellent work.
It is also important to acknowledge the many people in the school who help make such a great opportunity available. These include our maintenance staff who set up the space, library staff who provided access to excellent resources of Viking artefacts and the many teachers who guided the students and received and set up the display. It is exciting to be part of such a community.

Happy Easter from the Photography Faculty
During Week 9, students in Year 10 and 11 Photography were lucky to be able to photograph a group of baby bunnies for an Easter Photoshoot.
The boys had to focus on a moving subject, all while trying to maintain lighting and patience, as they waited for the perfect shot.

Adventures at Year 9 Camp
Between 23 and 25 March, Year 9 spent two nights and three days on camp at Wee Jasper, just outside Yass.
The area is notable for its river systems and the many caving opportunities which was the focus of the camp experience. I was so impressed with the behaviour, resilience, determination, commitment, and comradeship the students displayed during the activities and in their relationships with their peers. The activities varied greatly but drew out the adventurous nature of the students.
The camp was well organised and ran very smoothly due to the professionalism and commitment of all Australian Outdoor Education staff and of course the St Edward’s College staff who came along and supported Year 9 in their activity groups. In speaking with the boys over the last couple of days and in feedback from parents, one can only say that the experience at Wee Jasper was a tremendous success and enjoyed by many.

Sydney Metro Under 15’s Rugby League Selection Trials
On Wednesday 23 March the following boys were selected in the Sydney Metro Team: Luke Shereb, Cooper Jones, Sam Flakus, Archie Mesritz, Max Taylor, Darcy Smith and Oscar Mahoney. The boys now head to the NSWCCC Rugby League Championships in May at St Mary’s.
Cross Country
Due to the ongoing issues with wet weather and the sodden state of the ovals, we will be holding off on the running of the selection races for the Under 13, 14 and 15 age groups.
These will now be run on the first Friday (Week 1 Term 2 – Friday 29 May) back next term during Friday Afternoon Activities. The Broken Bay Cross Country will be held in Week 3 on Monday 9 May at St Ives Showground.
Representative Postponements
The NSW All Schools Team Triathlon (Wednesday 16 March) and the Broken Bay (BBSSSA) Under 13 Touch Football Gala Day (Tuesday 29 March) have both been postponed. Currently no new dates have been set for either event.
The NSWCCC Under 15’s Touch Football championships, after being cancelled last week with now be run as a selection trial on Friday 8 April. Successful applicants will be notified early this week. A date for the Under 18’s trials has yet to be set.

Parent Ideas: Will Smith – What to Tell Our Kids
Will Smith hit Chris Rock. What do we tell our kids?
This week, the biggest news event wasn’t war in Ukraine, floods on Australia’s East Coast, or even COVID surges. Instead, it was a story of an angry celebrity (Will Smith) storming the Oscars stage and hitting the comedian (Chris Rock) who made an inappropriately targeted joke at the expense of the angry man’s wife(Jada Pinkett Smith). And everybody is talking about it. Including our children.
How do we talk to our children about this incident?
What to Talk About With Your Children
The Smith/Rock saga offers an amazing opportunity to have real conversations with your kids about big questions we all face. But I think we can go a little deeper. Rather than talking to your kids, now’s the time for some really fascinating and important questions.
One of the most powerful ways that we build resilience in our children is by helping them to discover their identity. And we do that by asking them questions. In the wake of this incident we could ask questions so our children can learn about the kinds of people they are.
We can ask them questions about violence, like:
“Why do you think Will Smith hit Chris Rock?”
“Should he have done that?”
“When is it ok to hit someone and when is it not ok?”
“Should anyone ever hit anyone?”
We can ask them questions about humour, like:
“Is it ok to tell jokes at someone else’s expense?”
“How should we respond when someone tells an unkind joke?”
“What kind of humour is really funny, and what kind of humour isn’t?”
“Why do you think so many comedians make jokes at the expense of other people?”
We can even ask questions about honour, and feminism, like:
“Does a man have a responsibility to defend his wife or those close to him if someone offends them?”
“How might he defend them best? With fists? With words? Or in some other way?”
“What does this tell us about gender stereotypes? Women have to have beautiful hair? Men are strong and can hit people they disagree with or are offended by? Women are helpless?”
“Why is it more offensive to joke about a woman who has lost her hair than it is to joke about a man who has lost his hair and is bald?”

You may have heard of counterfactuals. A counterfactual is simply something that didn’t happen, but could have. It’s kind of like saying, “if koalas had wings, they could fly.” And counterfactuals provide us with all the tools we need to have quality conversations about tricky topics with our children.
Some fascinating counterfactuals you can ask your children (that will help them disentangle their feelings about violence, race, gender, and more) are:
“What if a white man (like Seinfeld) told the joke and Will Smith (a black man) hit him?”
“What if Chris Rock (a black man) told the joke and a white man (Hugh Jackman) hit him?”
“What if Jada Pinkett Smith got off her seat and hit Chris Rock? Is it ok for a woman to hit a man?”
Teaching Empathy and Humanity
Regardless of your views, or the views of your child, this incident also gives us the chance to teach empathy for both Smith and Rock.
For example, if you or your child think Smith did the wrong thing, ask, “Have your emotions ever gotten the better of you?” “Was he trying to ruin the night for everyone?” “Why did his brain flip its lid?” (Smith has said that “when I was nine years old I watched my father punch my mother in the side of the head so hard that she collapsed… I saw her spit blood… that moment in the bedroom, probably more than any other moment in my life, has defined who I am.”) Without excusing Smith, that moment and his inability to stop his father has probably played a part in what he did.
Empathy is feeling someone’s emotion in your heart. This conversation allows us to have compassion for the perpetrator and the victim.
And Chris Rock was just doing what decades of comics have done before him - picked on rich, successful people in the room. In poor taste, but can we have a sense of the humanity of both people without excusing them?
When we ask these kinds of questions, with curiosity and openness, we do a few important things for our children:
We build trust into our relationships. Our children know we are interested in them, their views, and their values. They see that we’re not trying to impose ideas. We’re real conversation partners. They belong with us, are safe sharing with us, and can learn with us.
We show them we believe in them. This fosters a sense of competence and capability. They learn to articulate their views, feelings, and reactions. Moreover, if we take our time and respond with gentle questioning, they learn that challenging topics can be broached respectfully, and ideas can be shared, even if the people in the conversation don’t completely agree with one another.
We teach them, specifically, about who they are. This happens because as they share their ideas, they’re tapping into their values. They’re shaping what they believe as they speak their words. It empowers them to continue talking, and continue discovering values that build identity.
Importantly, asking these questions of our children - and hearing their responses - opens them up to hearing our reactions, our values, and the ideas that make us who we are.
And finally: Will Smith apologised. Eventually. Via his publicist. Talking with your children about what makes a good apology might make for a very useful family discussion.
This week as you talk with your children about the Smith/Rock saga, withhold judgment, invite ideas, and watch your child grow in character right before your eyes.
