Push Up Challenge: A Triumph of Strength and Unity!
We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of our Push Up Challenge!
Over the past weeks, our community came together in an inspiring display of determination and teamwork. With 88 students and staff participating, we collectively completed an astounding 99,166 push-ups. This incredible effort helped us raise $3,362 for a worthy cause. Some of our students who raised the highest amounts were: Zach Sammut, Jamie Hennessy, Finn Van Aalderen, George Barry, Xavier Gerritsen and Jude Mathey.
The challenge was more than just a test of physical endurance; it was a testament to our spirit and solidarity. Each push-up represented our commitment to making a difference, and the funds raised will go a long way in supporting our chosen charity.
One of our participants, Alex, shared his thoughts: "Participating in the Push Up Challenge was an amazing experience. It was incredible to see everyone come together and push their limits for such a great cause. I'm proud to be part of this community!"
Did you know? Push-ups are not just a great exercise for the arms and chest; they also engage multiple muscle groups, including the core and lower body. There are over 50 variations of push-ups, such as clapping push-ups, diamond push-ups, and Spiderman push-ups.
A huge thank you to everyone who participated, cheered, and donated. Your enthusiasm and dedication have made this event a resounding success. Let's continue to build on this momentum and strive for even greater achievements in the future!
Keep pushing forward!

Waterford End of Term Update
A Time to Reflect and Serve our Community
As we wrap up another busy and rewarding term, it’s a great time to celebrate the positive momentum of the Waterford Service Learning Program. Across the College, students have continued to engage meaningfully with acts of service that benefit both our local and wider communities. From supporting events such as the Push-Up Challenge and Coast Shelter visits, to participating in Religious Retreats and other College initiatives, students are showing a strong commitment to the values of justice, compassion, and solidarity.
This term, students also engaged in the digital reflection process during Religion classes, responding to a series of questions in a Microsoft Form designed to prompt meaningful thinking about the purpose of their service. These reflections encouraged students to consider how their acts of service connect to the life and teachings of Jesus, and how Catholic Social Teachings can be lived out in real and tangible ways.
With the upcoming two-week school holidays, now is the perfect opportunity for students to plan and complete some Waterford hours—especially with the final submission due by the end of Term 3. Every hour counts, and the break provides a great chance to lend a hand around the home, volunteer in the community, or contribute to meaningful causes.
A list of activity ideas can be seen below in the Waterford Opportunities Document.
We look forward to seeing the many ways our students continue to live out the Edmund Rice tradition of service during the holiday break. Thank you to all families for your support of the Waterford Program so far—let’s keep the momentum going!

The Latest News from the English Faculty
The English Faculty at St Edward's College is adopting a hands-on approach to learning, providing students with immersive experiences that deepen their understanding of storytelling and ideas.
This focus on experiential learning is designed to engage students with texts in a dynamic way, connecting the words on the page to tangible, memorable events.
For our Year 12 students, this meant an enjoyably excursion to the Laycock Street Theatre to see a dramatic appropriation of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. Witnessing the novel's oppressive world constructed on stage offered a powerful sensory experience, reinforcing their analysis of the text's complex themes in the lead-up to the Trial HSC.
Year 11 Advanced English students participated in the Othello Symposium at the Seymour Centre, immersing themselves in a high-level academic discussion. This event provided them with direct access to scholarly insights into the construction of Shakespeare’s tragedy, allowing them to engage with the play as a piece of living theatre, analysed and debated by experts.
The value of direct engagement was also clear when Year 9 attended an incursion from Bell Shakespeare. The company's performance of Macbeth through a contemporary lens allowed students to interact with the play's characters and themes in an immediate and accessible way, forging personal connections with the 400-year-old text.
This pedagogical approach continues next term. Year 7 will complement their study of 'First Peoples' with an incursion from Uncle Tim Selwyn, who will provide a direct and authentic learning experience. Year 10 will also have the opportunity to see their curriculum come to life when the theatrical company 'Come You Spirits' stages a full production of Macbeth at the College.
This philosophy of learning by doing was perfectly captured in our second 'Book in a Day' initiative. Facilitated by Miss Atayde and Miss Moon, the project challenged students from Years 8 to 10 to become creators, not just consumers, of literature. By composing 'fractured fairy tales' in a single day, they actively engaged in the entire narrative process, from conception to collaboration and final composition. A huge congratulations to the following students who took on the challenge: Lorenzo Arango, Daniel Bates, Ezekiel Black, Fletcher Buda, Quinn Burke, Jorge Chavez, Daniel Drury, Joel Eddy, Nate Engelbrecht, Charlie Ercan, Harrison Evans, Tobias Fernandez Pranzo, Logan Gomez, Reagan Gomez, Joseph Hey, Hoi Tin Ho, Riley Howell, Bryce Johnson, Harry Kazoks, Max Klein-Schiphorst, Noah Lockwood, Beau Louie, Christian Naylor Adams, Vraj Patel, Joshua Reif, Joseph Sanfilippo, Luke Spicer, Aibel Thomas, Charles Ure, Cruz Vella and Sangpil Yoon.

Year 7 Hands-on Science
The Edd Drop Experiment
During Weeks 8 and 9, our Science class conducted an experiment to find the best ways to keep an egg safe when dropped from the second story.
My group’s design included a large plastic bag as a parachute, held open by a cross-section made of straws positioned at the base of the bag. These straws were attached to string, which connected to the stronghold containing the egg. We used two cupcake wrappers placed together to hold the egg, then filled the remaining space with cotton. We sealed the cupcake wrappers together with tape, and used plastic straws to create a pyramid-like structure to keep the wrappers stable. We added three straws at the bottom of the pyramid to act as landing gear, and finally, surrounded the structure with cotton to absorb the impact.
Most of the other contraptions failed to keep their eggs safe. A total of three out of eight eggs didn’t break—luckily, we were part of the successful three who protected their egg.

Open’s Rugby League Team
The Open Rugby League team contested the Central Coast Grand Final of the City Cup on Wednesday 18 June at Morry Breen Oval, Kanwal.
As we have in recent years, we came up against the always strong Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College (TLSC) in the final.
Tuggerah Lakes started quickly, and it was soon evident they were playing our game plan. Pushing up through the middle in numbers and then shifting to the edges once we had the momentum. They raced out to an early 16-0 lead. To the credit of our team, they fought back control of the game late in the half but could not convert this to points.
The talk was positive at halftime and the belief was there. However, Tuggerah Lakes again came out the blocks fast and scored early. At 22-0 down, this seemed to kick the boys into action. We gained control of the field position and mounted attack after attack on the Tuggerah Lakes line. We eventually scored and the tide seemed to change. We scored quickly again, the score now 22-10 and all the momentum was with us. One more try would have broken the Tuggerah team but we just couldn’t find it, with Tuggerah scoring late to eventually win 28-10.
Not to be disheartened, the boys were valiant in defeat but unfortunately Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College were too good on the day.
