St Edward’s Sacramental Mass
St Edward’s is dedicated to nurturing and encouraging the spiritual growth of each person, providing opportunities for our young men to deepen their faith and spirituality, through reflection, prayer, sacred stories, rituals and the sacraments.
One way this is achieved is through our College sacramental program. The culmination of this program for our ten students was to receive their sacraments during mass on Sunday June 26 at St Patrick’s East Gosford.
This Mass was celebrated by the most Reverend Bishop Anthony Randazzo, the commitment made by these young men and their families to support them on their faith and spiritual journey provides us with great joy as a community. Being able to support their decision and prepare them to receive the sacraments at their age is a great cause for celebration. We thank their families for entrusting us with this important role and thank them for their ongoing support.
We are forever grateful to Father Greg from St Patrick’s Parish for his dedication to working with our young men in the development of their own faith and spirituality. His ongoing willingness to engage with our boys and work with our community in celebrating the Eucharist and through offering reconciliation regularly throughout the year supports our community in living up to the core values that underpin the authentic Catholic Education we provide.
The following students received their sacraments:
Cooper Armstrong, Wylie Brock-Fenton, Shenath Fonseka, Cooper Mackinnon, Rory Markey, Tate Matthews, Darcy Staniland, Riley Stauner-Lumsden, Conor Stevens, Khoa Wignell

70th Celebration – A Big Night Out
On Thursday June 15, the College held a Musical Performance Night to mark the 70th Anniversary of the College.
The evening, which was held in the Edmund Rice Centre, was a huge success, providing an opportunity for past and current students to perform musical items. Over two hundred ex-students, teachers and support staff along with current staff and students were entertained with a range of outstanding musical performances from different eras and genres.
The evening provided many old boys with the opportunity to connect with old school mates, some of whom had not seen each other for over thirty years. Also present on the evening was the first ever female student to join classes at St Edward’s, Mrs Mavourna Collits. Mavourna attended the College in 1958 to study Latin with Br Shanahan the first College Principal. The “Forever the Black and Red” historical publication was also launched on the night marking the seventy years that St Edward’s has provided a quality Catholic Education to young people of the Central Coast.
I would like to thank Mrs Annette Rankin, the College Leader of Performing Arts, Mr Paul Toole, Music Teacher and Mrs Meagan Armstrong, Event Coordinator, for their work in organising this historical occasion.

2023 Push-Up Challenge
A heartfelt appreciation goes out to all the incredible students and dedicated staff members who participated in and registered for the 2023 Push Up Challenge.
It is with immense pride and admiration that we announce that, together as a united force, they managed to accomplish an awe-inspiring total of 75,361 (with 72,709 officially registered) Push Ups! This remarkable feat not only showcases their unwavering determination but also serves as a testament to their unyielding commitment to making a positive impact on the world.
Furthermore, their commendable efforts did not go unnoticed, as they successfully raised an astounding $2,135 in support of Mental Health. This outstanding contribution will undoubtedly play a vital role in assisting individuals in need, and it demonstrates their profound compassion and empathy towards those who are grappling with mental health challenges.
We would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to the generous parents and supportive friends who selflessly donated to the Eddies Team. Their unwavering belief in the cause and their willingness to lend a helping hand have played an integral role in this tremendous achievement.
In this remarkable journey, it is important to remember that every single push up and each dollar donated holds immense significance, regardless of its magnitude. It is the collective effort of each individual that has paved the way for such an impactful result. Together, we have shown that our actions, no matter how small they may seem, can create a ripple effect of positive change in the realm of mental health.
Once again, we express our deepest gratitude to all the participants, registrants, donors, parents, and friends who played an invaluable role in the 2023 Push Up Challenge. Your unwavering support and dedication have undoubtedly made a significant difference in the lives of those affected by mental health challenges. Let us continue to strive towards a brighter, healthier future for all.

Student Led Conferences for Years 7 to 12
During Term 3 parents/carers, teachers and students will have two opportunities to meet online and reflect on the learning that has taken place this year to date.
The dates and details for the Student Led Conferences will be:
Thursday 20 July (Week 1) from 4.00 pm to 7:30 pm
Thursday 27 July (Week 2) from 4.00 pm to 7:30 pm
These conferences will be held online via Microsoft Teams. Teachers will call the students on their Microsoft Teams account at the scheduled booking time to make contact – students must ensure they are logged in to Microsoft Teams using their St Edward's College email. It is preferable that students use their school laptop for this. Microsoft Teams meetings will not be recorded by teaching staff and we request that parents and students not record meetings either.
All conferences are intended to support your child in developing a greater sense of responsibility for their learning. It will be compulsory for students to attend all scheduled meetings with their parents/carers. Students will be expected to take an active role in leading their parents/carers and teachers through a reflection on their learning in that subject. There will be an expectation that students complete a reflection on their progress for each subject prior to the meeting. The student, parents/carers and teachers will then reflect on and evaluate the learning goals set and discuss strategies to address areas of challenge and achieve learning growth throughout Semester 2.
The Student Led Conference bookings are managed with an internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). The steps to access PTO are via the link below – once completed, you will receive an email from PTO allowing you to book interviews with your son’s teachers that you wish to see. Please note that bookings are limited. All interviews will be of seven minutes duration.
Access to PTO will be available from Thursday 29 June at 7:00 pm and will be closed off for bookings two days before interviews.
If you encounter any problems using PTO, please contact the school office on 4321 6400.
Please follow these steps to access the system:

The Latest from the Food Technology Faculty
The Food Technology faculty has been very busy with the students approaching their studies with great enthusiasm.
The boys are becoming more confident and competent in their practical abilities. Year 9 are mastering working in a team and I hope parents are being treated to some of the recipes from school being made at home. Year 10 have studied “Food and the Australian Identity” and they have undertaken a culinary journey across the globe, preparing dishes including Kangaroo and Crocodile Kebabs, Baked Spring Rolls and Cottage Pies.
[smallgallery fooid="45808"]
Year 11 have just finalised the Food Quality unit and are improving their presentation techniques. They recently participated in a workshop with Sharyn from Cake and Plate. They decorated cupcakes with buttercream and fondant, using a sporting theme. It was a fun-filled afternoon allowing the boys to show their creativity. The boys also prepared a “Big Breakfast” highlighting the functional properties of foods.
Year 12 have studied units relating to Food Manufacturing and Food Product development. We were fortunate to utilise local businesses to expand on what we have done in the classroom. The boys travelled to East Coast Beverages and Grace Springs Farm. Both of these venues provided the boys with informative insights into operating a business within the Australian Food Industry. Mrs McDonald was pleasantly surprised that one of the guides for our East Coast excursion was an ex-student, Daniel Ambler, who coincidently also studied Food Technology for the 2005 HSC.
East Coast Beverages is expanding and they are currently producing 330,000 litres of juice weekly. The boys experienced firsthand the production of various juices, as well as learning about the bottled water industry. We are grateful to the Lentini Family for supporting our annual visits. Grace Springs Farm is an ethical producer of poultry products and meats. They ensure their animals are treated with respect and advocate for Snout to Tail eating. They sell direct to the public at Avoca Beach markets, as well as supplying local cafes.
Hospitality students continue to improve on their mis-en-place and practical skills. Both Year 11 classes had successful work placements, with many students gaining part time jobs.
Mr Bridge, Mr Massey and I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Year 12 classes all the best for their upcoming Trial HSC examinations.

Under 15’s Rugby League – Grand Final
On Thursday of Week 7, the Under 15's Rugby League team travelled to Berkeley Vale to compete in the Central Coast High Schools Grand Final against Central Coast Sports College.
The conditions for rugby league couldn't have been better, and after a solid warm-up, the team started the game strongly. Sam Tracey, Toa Paea, and Billy Sands made impressive gains down the middle, propelling St Edward's to a dominant position. This led to our first points scored by Kye McIntosh, thanks to the excellent teamwork of Kobi Flanders and Will McClelland, who orchestrated a fantastic backline play.
However, Central Coast Sports College was determined not to give up, pressuring the Eddie's side with robust defence and powerful carries through the centre of the field. Costly errors in our half and too many dropped balls gifted the opposition valuable field position. While defending multiple sets on our line, Central Coast Sports College eventually crashed over and scored, taking advantage of the field position they had been given. They successfully converted the try, making the score 6-4.
The game continued to go back and forth for the rest of the first half, with neither side gaining the upper hand. However, the opposition slowly started to win the battle for field position as errors began to creep into our game. The halftime whistle blew, and after an inspiring speech by their team captain, our team was ready to give their all in the second half.
The second half began much like the first one ended, with both teams competing fiercely. However, Central Coast Sports College gradually gained the upper hand. The well-drilled opposition put our defence to the test and seemed likely to break through on multiple occasions. However, Jayden intercepted a pass, resulting in a try for Eddies, which went against the momentum of the game, bringing the score to 10-4.
Unfortunately, Central Coast Sports College did not let their heads drop, showcasing the impact of their weeks-long training programs and focus on the fundamentals of the game. They played with discipline and incredible structure for a school team, turning the momentum and capitalising on our persistent errors. In the final 10 minutes, they scored two tries, securing a victory over Eddies with a final score of 16-10. The difference on the day was discipline and the structure of the opposition, as our numerous errors and dropped balls allowed them to gain easy metres and field position. It was evident from watching Central Coast Sports College that their extensive training and focus on rugby league fundamentals gave them a significant advantage in a school-based competition.
Our team played with the great Eddies spirit and demonstrated immense pride in the jersey. The coaching staff is extremely proud of the effort and determination shown throughout the games. While there were many outstanding performances on the day, Will McClelland stood out, skilfully leading the team around the park and defending as if he weighed 20kgs more than he does. A massive congratulations to Will, who was also awarded the Player of the Game for St Edward's by the NRL staff present. The team and I would like to express our gratitude to manager Mr Herringe for providing water and keeping the team well-supplied with essential lollies before each game.

Opens Basketball
BBSSSA Championships
The Opens basketball team convened at Breakers Stadium, Terrigal for the annual BBSSSA basketball championships filled with anticipation for the challenge of securing a fourth consecutive title for St Edward’s College. The campaign began on a positive note with a comfortable triumph over St Leo’s Catholic College, with Tom Lawton and Micah Nisbett exhibiting exceptional skills on both offense and defense. St Paul’s presented a tougher test, pushing our team until midway through the second half. However, Tom Roth's remarkable performance on the boards, at both ends of the court, enabled the team to gradually distance themselves from their opponents in the final five minutes of the game.
Subsequently, our boys delivered impressive victories against St Peter’s Catholic College and St Brigid’s Catholic College. Since both teams were undefeated, the last pool match against Mater Maria Catholic College was regarded as the decisive final. Miles Henderson and Harry Bates spearheaded a dominant 15-point triumph, securing victory for our team. Their outstanding performance earned them the opportunity to advance to the CCC event in Port Macquarie.
St Edward's v St Leo’s 45-25 Win
St Edward's v St Paul’s 62-22 Win
St Edward's v St Peter’s 32-12 Win

St Edward's v MacKillop 25-17 Win
St Edward's v Mater Maria (final) 41-31 Win
CSNSW Championships
The group assembled on a sunny Sunday afternoon to embark on a journey to Port Macquarie for the CCC Championships. The boys were well aware of the daunting challenge that awaited them. Despite a narrow defeat that didn't dampen their spirits, a second loss against St Greg's College, Campbelltown meant that we had a crucial must-win game against Marian Catholic College. The boys started strongly, swiftly taking the lead with exceptional performances from Harry Bates and Micah Nisbett, who excelled with the ball, while Tom Lawton led the team from the forefront. At halftime, the team held a 10-point advantage and ultimately secured a much-needed victory. In the last game of the day, MacKillop proved too formidable, which meant we had to win both pool games on Tuesday morning to advance to the quarter-finals. O'Connor Catholic College, Armidale put up little resistance in a lopsided contest, and the team emerged triumphant in admirable fashion. St. John's College, Dubbo stood in our path for the quarter-final draw. The match remained evenly balanced at halftime and throughout the final minutes. With the scores level, St John's turned the ball over for a baseline inbound. Micah Nisbett swiftly passed the ball cross-court to Harry Bates, who calmly drained a clutch 3-point shot, putting us in the lead. We then forced another turnover, sealing the victory. In the quarterfinals, we faced a dominant St Dominic's Catholic College team. Although the boys performed well and gave their all, St Dominic's proved to be superior. St Dominic's went on to claim the CCC title.
St Edward's v St Francis Xavier, Hamilton 32-34 Loss
St Edward's v St Greg’s Campbeltown 42-47 Loss

Parenting Top Tips
Despite Mental Health Month already behind us, we should continue to focus for the rest of our lives.
As parents and caregivers, your emotional well-being plays a significant role in your ability to provide love and care to your children.
Parenting can be challenging, and it's completely normal to experience a range of emotions. Here are our top three tips for this week.
Top Tips
Prioritise self-care: Be kind and understanding towards yourself. Parenting is a learning experience, and it's okay to make mistakes. Treat yourself with the same love and compassion you offer your children.
Seek support: Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or professionals if you need someone to talk to. Don't hesitate to ask for help or guidance when you feel overwhelmed. Remember, it takes strength to seek support.
Connect with others: Engage in communities or support groups where you can connect with fellow parents or caregivers. Sharing your experiences, challenges, and triumphs can provide a sense of belonging and reduce feelings of isolation.
Your mental health matters! Taking care of your emotional well-being allows you to show up as the best version of yourself for your children and loved ones.
For those that are going away for a break, please take care on the roads and those that are travelling overseas, be patient and enjoy the time away. Looking forward to speaking with you next term.
With gratitude
Marcus Missio-Spiteri
College Counsellor
