Year 12 Wellbeing Day
On Wednesday 29 June, all Year 12 students attended a Wellbeing Day. The purpose of the day was to strengthen student understanding about respectful relationships and how to maintain good mental health.
The event commenced with students attending a seminar, “Secret Bloke’s Business”. The presentation was led by Brent Sanders, a former policeman and now a motivational public speaker. The seminar addressed three key elements:
Taking responsibility for yourself and your actions
Making right choices
The importance of respect and self-discipline.
Brent also gave students a clear understanding of the legal definitions of consent, indecent assault, and sexual assault. Brent shared with students real-life stories and personal experiences to highlight how heart-beat decisions can lead to life-long consequences.
Following the seminar, students enjoyed a combined lunch with the students from St Joseph’s. Then all students came together to listen to Silas from Headspace discuss how to handle exam pressure and life pressures and how to ask for help. The afternoon concluded with a Q & A session led by prefects from both schools.
For any student or parent interested in finding out more about the presenter, Brent Sanders, please see the following links:

Christian Rose – Order of Australia Commendation Medal
Christian Rose in Year 12, has recently been awarded the Order of Australia Commendation Medal by the Governor of NSW. Twenty young people across NSW will receive this award.
Christian Rose is an outstanding young man, who exemplifies the virtues of service, compassion and peace. He has been a student at St Edward’s College for six years and is highly respected by teachers and his peers.
Christian’s commitment to social justice and community is commendable. He is a Life Member and Youth Committee representative for Central Coast Ugnay Kabayan group (United People Inc) since 2012. Christian supports programs which aim to deal with issues such as low-cost accommodation, anti-domestic violence advocacy support especially for women and youth. His contributions include providing technical assistance, participation at cultural festivals and promoting future events. His support has been invaluable for people settling into a new life in Australia. His commitment has been focused and consistent throughout.
Christian has also been actively involved as a Basketball Coach in his Central Coast community since 2018 and mentoring young people, especially new players at a personal and skills level. This group is called the Higgins Crew. He has also been a voluntary event and sports photographer at many community events.
Christian is a leader. He was a student leader at the school immersion experience to Walgett in 2021. His compassion and clear understanding of the issues facing Aboriginal people was noted by others on many occasions. He also chose to participate strongly in the 2 billion Km’s to Safety Advocacy and fundraising program over the past few years.
Christian’s compassionate, gentle nature, his creative skills, and his passion for helping others have been a feature of the past six years. He is always looking to do more and to be more for others.

Food Technology
There have been many exciting things happening in the Food Technology department during the first semester. The boys continue to embrace the practical side of Food Technology and Hospitality.
The Year 9 and 10 students are increasing in confidence in their own skills and are starting to add their own flair to the presentation of their practicals.
Year 11 Food Technology participated in a workshop with Sharyn from Cake & Plate. The boys decorated cupcakes with a “Marvel” theme and learnt how to mould and work with fondant. There were 5 compulsory styles and the boys were then able to create their own. A fun day was had by all!!
Year 11 Hospitality had their first of two work-placements. The employers were impressed with their skills in the kitchen and ability to work in a commercial establishment.
Year 12 Hospitality have added to their repertoire of practical skills preparing a High Tea (for an assessment task), as well as a delicious Passionfruit Sponge. The recipe is below. Year 12 also completed their Prepare and Serve Espresso Coffee qualification at Blendco, Lisarow. We are grateful for Erin’s support in this training opportunity.
Year 12 Food Technology went to East Coast Beverages and Grace Springs Farm as part of their study into the Operations of the Australian Food Industry and Food Manufacturing. It was a fantastic opportunity to view the paddock to plate concept locally, as well as seeing a farmer that is committed to the ethical treatment of her livestock.

Year 12 Geography
The Year 12 Geography class visited Tamburlaine Organic Winery in the Hunter Valley last Wednesday to investigate wine making as part of their viticulture study.
During the tour, students gained an insight into the wine making process, from the vineyard through to the bottling stage. The group developed a greater appreciation for both the art form and science involved in one of Australia's most important industries. Furthermore, the class got to explore parts of Pokolbin and terroir (sense of place), that make the Hunter Valley so good for wine production.
To complete the experience and reward a hard day of learning, the class enjoyed a delicious lunch at a restaurant. A special mention to Tom McHale and Mitchell Pink, who enjoyed the brisket.
A huge thank you to Mr Judd, who shared his expertise on the Australian wine industry with the students as they prepare for the Trial HSC.

Equine Therapy
Last term, some of our Year 7 and Year 8 students enjoyed travelling to Somersby to attend an equine therapy program at Holistic Equine.
This Friday activities program is working on developing student confidence, achieving personal set goals, and learning skills as they work with different people and horses. Students have learnt how to approach, read and groom a horse; work in teams to create challenge obstacles and then lead a horse through it; work with a variety of horses such as miniature horses, brumby and quarter horses to problem solve and care for a horse. Each student had a favourite horse and spent time feeding the horses. We have decided to continue with the program this term and there are even some Year 9 students trialling it.

Open’s Rugby League
The Open’s Rugby League team travelled down to Kerlie Park, Manly to play in the Sydney City Rugby League Finals Day.
After battling washouts, venue changes and traffic on the way down we thought we were finally going to be able to play some footy. During the warm-up we were told that Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College had pulled-out of the day. This meant a change to the draw and game times.
We eventually got out there to play Alexandria Park School (South Sydney Region) in our first game. A timid first set from both teams saw us finally get the ball and from there we ran away with the game winning comfortably 38-0. This was highlighted by some individual brilliance and support play in scoring several of our tries. It was great to see Sione Ofahengaue in Year 12, Sean Bullen in Year 11, Kurt Halls in Year 11 and DeVontae Votuua in Year 10, play their first game with the Opens team.
There was a short turn-around into our second and final game (15 mins), which then became an actual Grand Final against De La Salle College (Cronulla Region). The game time was extended to warrant this, and it helped us with the result in the end.
The game in the first half was a very tough and brutal match, with both teams trading some big hits and heavy contact. The game was fought in the middle and did not allow our slick backs many opportunities to get into the game. De La Salle scored first, late in the first half to lead 4-0 at the break. The team identified a few things to work on in the second half and went about capitalising on those changes. Changing angles and retreating our markers took away the wrestle and ruck control De La Salle had over us in the first half. This allowed us to play off some momentum going forward scoring tries from Malachai Smith and Tommo Peters.
We eventually ran out winners 12-4 in a very tight game. A fantastic result that showed true grit and determination from the team.

10 Jobs that Didn’t Exist 10 Years Ago
We talk a lot about how the world of work has – and continues – to change.
But how are these changes informing the job market and the types of jobs available today?
Great questions! And we thought it would be an excellent opportunity to sit down and look at some of the jobs currently in demand and emerging that you wouldn’t have found on SEEK or anywhere else ten years ago.
Let’s get into it!
So, What New Jobs Are There?
It’ll probably come as no surprise, but many of these jobs have come about due to increased use and reliance on various technologies across different industries.
It’s super interesting to see how businesses are responding to technological advances and the human roles needed to adopt them:
1. DRIVERLESS CAR ENGINEER
Once completely the realm of science-fiction, technology is well and truly catching up! Thanks to companies like Tesla and General Motors, driverless cars are on the up.
It’s not just personal cars either – trucks, trains and buses are all evolving to be driverless like the RAC Intelli-bus – a driverless shuttle operating in South Perth, Western Australia, since August 2016.
And with the rise of this new technology, a new type of engineer is required. Autonomous vehicles have different requirements and engineering needs from human-driven vehicles – enter the field driverless car engineers!
2. RIDESHARING DELIVERY SERVICES
It might be hard to imagine a world pre-Uber eats, but it was only in 2014 that it launched, and many other similar services emerged around the same time.
Building on the need in the industry for delivery drivers who wanted the flexibility to build their work-life balance through a self-employed role, Uber Eats, Deliveroo and other services launched into the market with great success.
3. SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER
Social media has become a massive part of our lives and economies. From Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and now, TikTok – these platforms are shaping our personal lives and professional businesses.
To stay current, brands need to understand the power of social media and utilise it in the right ways. One way they do it is to use social media influencers to promote a product or a service. The fact this career keeps growing is proof it’s one that might be here to stay.
4. PODCAST PRODUCER
Love or hate them; podcasts are big business these days! Circle back ten years, and you might have found a handful out there, but podcasts have grown as people started discovering the value of presenting ideas in different ways.
With over 2 million podcasts now existing worldwide the emergence of a new role has evolved: podcast producers.
Helping successful hosts create and deliver a polished show, podcast producers support guest scheduling and management, quality control, promotion and uploading new episodes to platforms.
5. BIG DATA SCIENTIST
Data mining, machine learning, and big data were barely on the tech radar ten years ago, but today they’re a core part of how many organisations operate.
From Google search data to Twitter feeds, website hotspots and cold zones – understanding, interpreting and presenting big data and how to make the most of it is a core part of big data scientists’ work. They help companies better understand and use big data to reach audiences and promote services in positive ways.
6. BLOCKCHAIN ANALYST
We’re probably not the best people to ask about blockchain – we’re still trying to figure out our regular banking!
But that’s where a blockchain analyst can step in instead!
With the rise of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, blockchain is becoming an integral technology. Blockchain analysts are experts in the tech and use their knowledge to advise and support companies to maximise the benefits of tapping into this market.
7. ESPORTS GAMES COACH
You might have heard of ‘fantasy football’ and thought it was just a hobby for a few die-hard fans, but eSports is BIG business.
ESports – a competitive video gaming industry between professional players and teams – commands billions of dollars annually and their events fills stadiums with participants and fans. As more and more people seek to get involved, those who have made a success of it are offering their expertise in the form of eSports Coaches. Helping and assisting gamers to go from strength to strength is a new role that’s already seeing lots of interest and demand!
8. CLOUD ARCHITECT
Cloud software stores information online rather than on individual computer hard drives. Many applications are supported by cloud software – including your smartphone and Netflix.
Cloud computing continues to grow, creating the need for cloud specialists. Often referred to as cloud architects, these tech-savvy individuals support planning, designing and maintaining the systems a company uses for their cloud computing needs.
Cloud architects support everything from storage processes to data security.
9. CHIEF LISTENING OPERATOR
No – we didn’t just make that up – it’s a fundamental role! Again, social media is to thank for the development of this one. As more people take to their platforms to talk about, complain about, and share stories of different services and companies, chief listening officers (CLO) play a role in seeing what’s being said about the company they work for.
A CLO is responsible for monitoring an organisation’s online presence, taking the information they find and passing it to relevant departments or teams to be dealt with appropriately. It could be a complaint or a good news story – anything that relates to the business somehow.
10. SUSTAINABILITY CONSULTANT
It’s no surprise that sustainability has become a huge agenda for lots of businesses in recent years, and many want to know how they can do more to reduce their overall carbon footprint and support climate change issues.
Sustainability consultants work across various industries making recommendations and action plans to help companies do this.
You can find sustainability consultants working in mining, construction and manufacturing, food production and agriculture, fashion and clothing manufacturing – and more!
Where to From Here?

UAC News
All Courses Available Soon
All 2023 courses from UAC’s participating institutions will be available on UAC’s website in early August.
For students who have already applied, this is the time for them to log in to their application and review and update their preferences.
For students who haven’t yet applied the early bird period ends on Friday 30 September, at which time the processing fee increases. Even if they’re not sure what course they want to study, they should apply now and put in any course as a placeholder until they are ready to decide.
UAC PIN reminder
An email will be sent to Year 12 students who haven’t applied in early August to remind them of their UAC PIN. PINs will be emailed to the address they have registered with NESA, so they need to ensure that this is a current email address.
To start their UAC application students will need their Year 12 student number (issued through their school) and their UAC PIN. Once they have applied, they can then use their UAC application number and UAC PIN to log in and manage their application.
If students don’t have their UAC PIN email, or are having problems with their PIN, they can read the PIN FAQs or contact UAC.
Early Offers to Year 12 Students
While the ATAR is still the main selection tool used by most unis, there are other ways for students to show that they’re ready to succeed at tertiary study. This means they may be able to receive an offer to university before ATARs are released.
Why apply through UAC?
Applying through UAC allows students to choose from more than 2,300 courses across 27 institutions in one application. Some of those institutions also offer direct applications. Students unsure about whether they should apply through UAC or direct to an institution should consider the following:
not all institutions accept direct applications from Year 12 students
having a UAC application also allows students to apply for the Educational Access Scheme, Schools Recommendation Scheme and Equity Scholarships
having a UAC application enables students to apply for up to five different courses and to change their mind as often as they wish in just a few clicks
having a UAC application as well as a direct application with different preferences will give students more chance of securing an offer.
Career Guidance
Understandably, many Year 12 students are still figuring out what to do when they leave school, let alone setting clear career goals. Among his many practical career tips for school leavers, careers expert Phillip Williamson suggests that students focus on their direction, not their destination.
Your student can book in for a personalised session with the National Careers Institute's School Leavers Information Service. In this free, 45-minute session, they will speak one-on-one with a qualified careers practitioner who can help them make informed decisions about their next steps.

Supporting your Teen – The Fathering Project
Supporting Your Teen to Have Healthy Self-Esteem
What do you remember most from your teen years?
An often carefree and exciting time, but with many changes taking place both physically, emotionally and cognitively.
With these changes can come feelings of confusion and insecurity around self-image and self-esteem where teens need our support and guidance.
There is clear evidence that fathers can have a distinct impact on their teenager’s self-esteem, particularly when it comes to their daughters.
Three tips to support their self-esteem
Encourage them to try new activities and take calculated risks.
Show them that their opinions and what they say is valued and important to you.
Evaluate the realism of images seen online, on TV and movies. Remind them that what's portrayed is not reflective of real life; that they shouldn't compare themselves to these ideals.

Top Fathering Tips
Take part in activities they enjoy. Engage in things they want to do and do it together. Whether it's gaming, sport, creative arts or going out to their favourite place to eat.
Make the most of the time in the car. Drive them to and from friend's houses or outings and spend the travel time catching up.
Take an interest in their friends. This will give you valuable insight into how they are coping emotionally and socially, as well as connect you to the young people most important to your child.
