Drama, Entertainment, Screen and Media
Year 11 Drama
Year 11 Drama have made history this year, as they are part of the first combined St Joseph’s and St Edward's senior Drama class. The students share their lessons between the schools benefitting from both schools’ resources. During first term, students were given the task of creating an original piece of theatre developed from a stimulus. This term, our work is all about the elements of production in performance with a focus on set design, costume design, poster design and theatrical review. We even managed a sneaky excursion to the Sydney Theatre Company to see ‘Playing Beattie Bow’.
Year 12 Drama
As we head closer to the Trial HSC exams, Year 12 Drama are working diligently on their Group Project performances. The Group Project is an opportunity for students to work together to create a unique piece of theatre that is 8-12 minutes long. The Group Performance demonstrates a student’s ability to work successfully as part of a team, their flair and originality, their performance skills and their intimate understanding of narrative structure. The boys are looking forward to showcasing their progress at Year 12 Drama Night!
Year 11 Entertainment
Year 11 Entertainment are in the midst of a unit of work on Audio and are currently producing live radio programs that demonstrate their knowledge on audio systems. As well as this, a group of Year 11 Entertainment students have given up their time to work back stage to support the Year 12 Music and Drama students on the performance nights. Well done boys!
Year 12 Entertainment
Last week, the Year 12 Entertainment class completed an important assessment task which required them to create and run a simulated live performance. This assessment task is the culmination of almost two years of study and allows the boys to showcase the skills they have built throughout the VET Entertainment course. The boys were responsible for acting, staging, lighting, audio and vision for the production. All students demonstrated excellent knowledge of the Entertainment industry and completed the task with maturity and aplomb. They are now working towards revision for their Trial and HSC exams.
Year 11 Screen and Media
Now in its second year as a subject offering, screen and media gives students a chance to immerse themselves into film making. The current unit of work is all about creating a promotional video for the College. Students have been interviewing students and staff to gather a unique perspective. A highlight so far this year was a combined Year 11 and 12 incursion with Jason van Genderen from Treehouse Creative on mastering the iPhone as a device to make feature films.
Year 12 Screen and Media
Year 12 Screen and Media have been working hard to keep SECTV running whilst completing their studies. This term they have focused on live production of a ‘Morning Talk Show’. This has involved the students working in groups to prepare and film a Talk Show. The studio will be the College Green Screen room and some segments have been filmed “on location”. Some fun and exciting work has been produced!

Year 9 Commerce Excursion
As part of the Commerce Course the Year 9 students studied the topic Running a Business. To obtain a first-hand look at how businesses are organised, an excursion to Erina Fair Shopping Centre was organised.
The focus in this unit was for students to investigate how entrepreneurial attributes and dispositions contribute to business success. They examined the considerations involved when planning and running a business. The students also investigate key issues and processes related to the various aspects of running a business.
The excursion provided students with an opportunity to experience businesses in action. Erina Fair Shopping Centre consists of several types of businesses selling and promoting a range of products and services. It also encourages competition between these businesses. The students observed and recorded notes on consumer behaviour, store layout, store location and methods of advertising while exploring Erina Fair.

Model United Nations Assembly
This term two teams represented St Edward’s College at the Central Coast Model United Nations Assembly.
Both our senior and junior teams spoke with confidence and demonstrated their extensive knowledge on each of the resolutions. The junior team in particular, who were representing the United States of America, were attacked from all sides and did a great job defending their difficult position. It was a fantastic day where the boys could develop their understanding of the vital role of the United Nations and build on their speaking skills. Congratulations to our senior team Jett and Jai Heaney who were delegates for France, and to our junior team Blake Downs, Daniel Herd, and Jayden Redfern who demonstrated admirable commitment and teamwork throughout the day.

Rostrum Voice of Youth
This term Daniel Herd represented St Edward’s in the regional finals of the Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition at Abbotsleigh.
This final saw students from Sydney and the Central Coast deliver an eight-minute speech and a three-minute impromptu speech with the winner progressing to the state final. Again, Daniel proved to be a strong competitor and while he did not place, he is to be commended for competing in such a rigorous competition against students who were, for the most part, in Years 11 and 12. Congratulations, Daniel on your ability to capture an audience. The prepared speech was outstanding, but equally impressive is the ability to produce an engaging and considered impromptu speech – it is not easy to create a speech on the spot and deliver it to an audience without rehearsing!

Plain English Speaking
This term Jayden Redfern and Daniel Herd represented St Edward’s in the Plain English Speaking Competition.
The Plain English Speaking Award aims to encourage the use of clear and effective spoken English. Since 1978, the competition has provided an invaluable opportunity for NSW senior students to improve their confidence and to develop their speech-writing and public speaking skills. Jayden and Daniel demonstrated their outstanding public speaking ability commanding the attention of their audience and demonstrating thorough knowledge of their topics nuclear disarmament, and the ill treatment of women, respectively. Although Jayden and Daniel did not place in this round they received positive feedback from the adjudicator, and teachers from other schools commented on how well they spoke on the day. Congratulations to both Jayden and Daniel for their commitment to public speaking and, in particular, on their impromptu speeches that were engaging, relevant, and topical – it was fantastic to watch!

Year 9 and 10 All Schools Touch Football – Sydney Metro
In what was called the coldest day in 37 years, our Year 9 and 10 team travelled to the Kingsway Playing Fields in St Mary’s to contest the Metro All Schools carnival.
Feeling the effects of the cold weather, our boys bravely stepped out of the warm bus to begin their campaign. As the weather gods would have it, intermittent rain also began in the middle of our warm-up and remained with us for the day.
The boys played pool games against St Dominic’s Catholic College (winning 4-0), Gilroy Catholic College (winning 7-3) and Wollemi College (winning 9-0). Due to a team pulling out the day before, we were ranked 1-4 and our remaining pool game was again against Wollemi College. As the boys had done all morning, they continued their good team play and ran away with the game to win 7-0 and top their pool. A fantastic display of wet weather touch football.
The format of the day involved a game on game-off situation, with the girls' competition playing when we had our break. It was decided amongst the team to spend our breaks in the bus with the heater on to keep us warm. Nevertheless, the boys continued their run in the competition. Firstly, against Oxford Falls College in the quarter finals, winning comfortably 10-0. Our semi final was a much closer and competitive game against Narrabeen Sports High. By this time, the wet and muddy conditions had slowed down the pace of the game and made it very difficult to create opportunities. The team, however, was able to hang in there and graft out a late try to seal a 3-2 win.
Onto the final and as fate would have it, we played another coast team, Narara Valley High School. Fatigue had started to impact our depleted team of nine players and the conditions did not help. Narara was able to score two quick tries and the team was unable to claw their way back. We eventually lost the game 3-1. Full credit to Narara who were too good in the end.
Our team consisted of: Kieran Diamond, Tyrone Dorrell, Dylan Day, Will Hodder, Sean Bullen, Jonah Wright, Calan Tucker, Matt Humphries and Sam Flakus.
Well done to these boys on a tremendous team effort on the day. Also, a big thank you to Toby Paterson in Year 12 who was our designated referee for the day.

Under 14 Rugby League
The Under 14’s Rugby League side were scheduled to play in the next round against St Joseph's College, Lochinvar at Cessnock Sports Ground.
The game began well for the boys scoring an early try through Jay Clarke which was converted by Sam Flakus. Lochinvar drew level 2 minutes later but our boys composed themselves and went into the halftime break with a handy 16-6 lead. The second half produced the same result with Jay Clarke claiming his hat-trick and Donovan Wright scoring a powerful try from 25 meters out. Other try scorers were Riley Turner and Kieran White. We finished with a convincing 32-12 win and progressed through to the next round to be played in Port Macquarie.

Guide For Parents – Sport Registrations >>
Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics, Rugby League (U15/18’s), Touch Football (U15/Opens) and Football (Opens) registrations are through the Diocesan/Association pathways.
For further information, go to the CSNSW Sport website Sport pages.
Representative Sport
The College has now moved to online permission notes for Sport. Parents will be emailed information about the event (date, venue, uniform, travel arrangements, etc) and a link for you to provide permission for your son to attend the event. Sometimes this note will be emailed prior to us receiving a draw for the event and because of this it is often not included in the online permission note. Staff/coaches will then endeavour to pass on this information as soon as they receive it.
Could you please discuss with your sons the arrangements for these events, so they are aware of what is going on. If the date conflicts with Assessment Tasks (due dates) or Exams, the boys are responsible for talking with their teachers and coming to an agreement on what is required for them to attend the event.
Finally, if you son is selected in a Representative team (BBSSSA, SICC, NSWCCC or NSW All Schools), we also ask that you notify the College of his selection and details of the event. Often with these teams we do not receive any further information other than notification of his selection. Mr Bonnici will review each student’s selection before giving his Principal’s permission for them to attend. However, nothing further is passed on to us.
If you intend on travelling early or staying longer at these events, we require notification to determine the nature of the travel and the type of leave applied to this. If the date conflicts with Assessment Tasks (due dates) or Exams, the boys are responsible again for talking with their teachers and coming to an agreement on what is required for them to meet their school-based requirements.

ACU Guarantee applications are now open
Due to the overwhelming number of applications we received last year, we are very excited to continue the ACU Guarantee early offer program in 2021.
Learn more about ACU Guarantee
How it Works
ACU Guarantee removes the ATAR requirement for a student’s desired course and makes an early offer to successful applicants prior to sitting their final exams. This alleviates common stresses and anxiety many students have about achieving their perfect score.
This program will consider a student’s Year 11 results and a predicted selection rank will be generated by our admissions team when assessing applications. The offer is conditional on completing exams and meeting the subject prerequisites for their preferred course.
Why Apply to ACU Guarantee
Students may be concerned that their Year 11 results aren’t the best due to the impact of COVID-19, however they can rest assured that all Year 12 students are in the same position and this will be taken into account.
Applications for this program are free of charge and available through the ACU Guarantee portal, so we encourage all students to apply – they never know what offer could await them.
Visit the ACU Guarantee portal
How to Apply
Once students begin an application, they can select up to two course preferences – to be considered for this program they are not required to apply through UAC in addition to applying for ACU Guarantee.
They will also have the opportunity to provide up to three personal statements addressing different categories (maximum 200 words each) outlining personal circumstances and motivation for university study.
Students will be notified of their application outcome via email and offers will be made fortnightly. Applications close midnight Friday 24 September.
Explore our ACU Guarantee application and offer FAQs.
If you have any questions about ACU Guarantee, please contact the Future Students team.

Parenting Ideas – Digital Boundaries
Establishing Digital Boundaries for a Good Night's Sleep
It’s well established that sleep is vital for children and adolescents’ learning, physical health, mental wellbeing and emotional regulation. Yet, a concerning number of Australian children and adolescents aren’t meeting the national sleep guidelines according to a recent study*.
There are many reasons for young people’s poor sleep habits including school demands, co-curricular and/or work commitments, perceived pressure from parents and educators and consumption of energy drinks. Young people’s digital device habits can have a significant, negative impact on their sleep.
Handheld devices emit blue light which hampers melatonin production. This can result in the delayed onset of sleep and potentially shorten critical phases of the sleep cycle. Research confirms that children who have not yet gone through puberty are particularly vulnerable to blue light exposure in the evening as they have larger pupils, compared to post-puberty adolescents.
Strategies to Stop Screens From Sabotaging Your Child’s Sleep
Parents can have a positive influence on their child and teens’ digital habits and doing so will yield positive results for their child’s sleep and subsequent learning and wellbeing.
Establish a Digital Bedtime
Kids should switch off digital devices 60 minutes prior to falling asleep. Reinforce this habit by establishing a ‘landing zone’ such as a kitchen bench, or desk in a study or sideboard where digital devices go for charging and storage. Many students report that they ‘need’ to complete homework or submit assignments late at night. Verify the validity of such statements and work in partnership with your child’s school to limit this type of required screen activity at night. Parents need to also be good role models by switching off before bed too.
Tech-Free Zones
Bedrooms should be tech-free zones so consider buying an alarm clock if your child uses a mobile phone to wake themselves up. Keeping devices out of bedrooms removes the tech-temptation to use them throughout the night, reduces the likelihood that they’ll reach for them upon waking and lessens the chance of cyberbullying incidents. Ensure any devices left in bedrooms are on airplane mode and that the device is away from their line of sight.
Ensure a Daily Dose of ‘Greentime’
Exposure to natural blue light from sources such as the sun is critical for regulating circadian rhythms and promoting sleepiness at night. Ensure your child/teen is exposed to bright, natural, daytime light preferably before midday each day.
Use Blue Light Filters
Most devices include options for ‘night mode’ or ‘dark mode’ that reduce blue light exposure. Dimming the brightness of the screen in the settings or applying a filter on a desktop or laptop also assists.
Do a Screen Swap Before Bed
Encourage passive tech activities before bed such as watching TV, listening to an audiobook, music or podcast, or reading on an e-reader.
It can be a challenge navigating digital boundaries with your child or teen particularly when it involves sleep, which is vital for health, wellbeing and learning. Talk to them regularly about the importance of sleep using science and facts to substantiate your claims.
