Founder’s Day Celebration
On Founder’s Day each year we come together to celebrate our College, our Founder Edmund Rice, and to deepen our sense of community and service to others.
Edmund Rice is the example we look to in learning about standing with the poor, being ‘other’ centred and generally about being a good human person; letting our humanity shine to promote and increase the dignity and respect we afford our fellow men and women. Throughout the day as a College we raised funds for those who are marginalised or disadvantaged within our community AND built a stronger sense of belonging with one another. The gold coin donations again contributed to our support and our sponsorship of the education of Fredrick Were in Kenya.
This year is a special year within the history of St Edward's, as it marks the 70th Anniversary of the College. Being such a significant year, the 70th Anniversary was the focus of Founder’s Day in 2023 and the students were asked to celebrate the College in their own unique way.
To do this, students worked in their Home Rooms to create, practice or be involved in something that celebrated the 70 years of St Edward’s College. From writing letters to Fredrick or building closer community relationships by throwing sponges at teachers, multiple aspects of who we are as a College were on display.
Stairs Sprint - Results
The Stairs Sprint run during Founders Day produced great competition and many fast times. Many students from all year groups attempted the Stair Sprint challenge. Some students had many attempts to try and improve their time. The following times were the best on the day.
Congratulations to Miki Szczytnicki in Year 7 with a time of 4.19 seconds and Blake Downs in Year 12 with a time of 4.01 seconds, who set the fastest times ever for their Year groups since records began in 2014.
Year 7 – Miki Szczytnicki: 4.19 seconds
Year 8 – Cruz Tucker: 4.50 seconds
Year 9 – Jayden Moggs: 4.32 seconds
Year 10 – Jesse Mantel: 4.37 seconds
Year 11 – Arky Cleverly: 3.80 seconds
Year 12 – Blake Downs: 4.01 seconds

Max Potential
Sandor Torak of Year 11 was the St Edward’s representative for ‘Max Potential’, a leadership program that connects high school students with local community and business leaders who are trained as coaches.
Over five months, Sandor engaged in workshops and worked tirelessly to deliver an initiative, and a sales pitch, that takes an entrepreneurial approach to meeting needs within the local community. Sandor’s focus for his presentation was to highlight the importance of water safety, especially at our beaches. Sandor’s successful pitch was very well-received and has even garnered support from local members of parliament who are keen to support Sandor’s ideas to see them come to fruition. We are very proud of Sandor’s achievements and look forward to seeing where this road leads for him.

Book Week Celebrations
Last week the library was buzzing with all things books!
We had daily competitions, Kahoot, the Harry Potter Scavenger Hunt, Legoland and a heap of other book related activities. The boys were great participants, and their competitive nature really shone through with the highly coveted book bundles and canteen vouchers up for grabs daily.
Our Harry Potter Scavenger Hunt saw the boys working together around the school to solve the clues to unlock the magical treasure at the end. We realised during this challenge just how much boys are motivated by lollies and chocolate.
On Thursday book week finished with a bang with staff and students coming dressed as their favourite book characters. The photobooth was one of the highlights of the week and it was great to see staff and students embrace their inner child and have some fun all in the name of reading for pleasure.
This Tuesday to continue our Book Week celebrations we had Author Steven Herrick visiting Years 7, 8 and 9. Steven is the author of twenty-eight books for children and young adults. His books have twice won the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards; been shortlisted for the CBCA Book of the Year Awards on ten occasions; and been shortlisted for a number of other awards in Australia including the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award and the Qld Premier’s Literary Award. We are very excited and honoured to have him here to talk to our students.
Thank you to all the staff and students who were involved in creating games and promoting book week and a special thank you to all who came dressed up – it created a wonderful atmosphere. Also a big congratulations to all our competition winners – many of who will be announced at assembly this week.
We can’t wait to do it all again next year!

Breakfast With Books
The grand reopening of 'Breakfast With Books' couldn't have come at a more opportune moment, with St Edward’s College celebrating Book Week in Week 5.
Every Wednesday morning, the kitchen attached to Room 57 transforms into a haven for book enthusiasts. Mrs Titheradge, with her passion for both books and fostering a love for reading, has been the driving force behind this unique club. The anticipation leading up to the reopening was palpable, and attendees were not disappointed.
The grand reopening brought forth a delightful spread that was a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. Attendees were treated to a delectable breakfast, including the ever-popular Nutella Overnight Oats that have become the club's signature dish. The aroma of good food mingled seamlessly with the spirit of literary exploration.
However, the excitement did not stop at the sumptuous breakfast. The event was peppered with a lucky dip draw that added an element of surprise and delight. From bookmarks to book lights, and even free vouchers to the club, participants left with tangible reminders of the morning's celebration. This novel addition added an extra layer of excitement to the proceedings.
The success of the grand reopening was evident in the impressive turnout. With 38 students and staff members in attendance, this edition of 'Breakfast With Books' turned out to be the most successful morning ever. The event was not just about reading; it was a coming together of individuals who shared a common passion for literature and a zest for life.
Mrs Titheradge warmly invites everyone to join in every Wednesday, it's not just about books - it's about creating a space for reading, relaxation, and a sense of community. Moreover, let's not forget the icing on the cake: the promise of the 'cheapest breakfast on the coast.' With 'Breakfast With Books' back in full swing, Book Week celebrations just got a whole lot more exciting.

Year 11 Manufacturing and Engineering
In-house Knowledge
Year 11 Manufacturing and Engineering students were in for a special treat as they were privileged to have a guest appearance by Mark Hawes, from the College's Maintenance staff and also a former plumber. Mr Hawes, who had once led a substantial plumbing business, generously took time out of his day to impart his invaluable wisdom and trade secrets to our senior Manufacturing and Engineering students.
Mr Hawes possesses a wealth of knowledge and experience, his journey from a skilled plumber to a successful business owner is an inspiring narrative, and one that the students could learn immeasurable lessons from. His anecdotes and practical demonstrations left an indelible mark on the students, igniting their passion for the fields of Manufacturing and Engineering.
Students were grateful for the opportunity to learn from a true expert in the field and Mr Hawes' visit served as a reminder that mentorship and the passing down of expertise plays a crucial role in nurturing the talents of young individuals and ensuring the continuity of excellence in fields like Manufacturing and Engineering. Mr Hawes' cameo was not just an informative session; it was a bridge between the past and the future, a symbol of the enduring legacy of craftsmanship, and a testament to the power of mentorship in shaping the engineers and manufacturers of tomorrow.

Education Perfect, Language Championships - French
Earlier this term, all Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 French students competed in the Education Perfect Language Championships, and what a success it has been! With 423 schools involved across regional and metropolitan NSW, St Edward's finished in 2nd place overall, which is an incredible achievement. Our French students showed great determination, resilience and wonderful school spirit, competing not only against each other, pushing themselves to improve their vocabulary retention and recall, but they also supported and cheered one another on in the race to obtain more accuracy points against the other schools competing.
We also ranked first for French with the highest average point score per student amongst all the other schools.
The French department are incredibly proud of the effort and dedication Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 have put into this competition, showing their love of languages and learning.

Intermediate Basketball
The 2023 Intermediate Basketball Team travelled to the Terrigal basketball stadium where they performed exceptionally well against some strong opposition.
Seven straight wins would see the Team claim the title of BBSSSA Champions for 2023. Fine performances in the pool stage against St Peter's Catholic College and St Leo's Catholic College laid the foundations for a very successful day. Cruz McMahon and Brooklyn Roberts were exceptional at both ends of the floor, while Mackay Jackson and Neo Thompson contributed to the majority of the scoring.
The boys won tough opening contests against MacKillop Catholic College and St Paul’s Catholic College and then went on to defeat Mater Maria Catholic College in a fiery battle. A comfortable win against St Brigid’s Catholic College saw them reach the final against St Leo’s to secure a place in the final. Cruiz McMahon’s exceptional 3 point shooting was the difference in the first half as the team led by 10 at the break. Brooklyn Roberts rebounded the ball at both ends of the floor to ensure the team was never headed. Despite a late run by our opponents the boys lifted and the score got away from the opposition. Next stop, the CCC tournament in Term 4.

In the round robin, the St Edward’s College squad defeated teams from MacKillop Catholic College, St Leo’s Catholic College, St Paul’s Catholic College, Mater Maria Catholic College, St Brigid’s Catholic College and St Peter’s Catholic College. In the grand final, the boys started out a bit slow but blitzed Mater Maria Catholic College in the second half, winning with a score of 42-23.
Throughout the tournament, St Edward’s boys averaged 35 points a game, allowing only 18 points against them per game.
Oscar McMahon, Austin Romain and Max English led the team with their scoring. Aden Tillot, Joel Washington and Fletcher Bush played great defence and were tasked with keeping the opposition in check. Jonah Bromfield, Ike Diffin and Rasmus Borg dominated the defensive boards. Nate Frohmuller, Joshua Fenton and Joshua Winter provided offensive assists and showed great all-around hustle each game.

Teaching Excellence
Celebrating Teaching Excellence
We are honoured to announce to our community that Mrs Juliana Dignam, the College Leader of Learning in Careers/VET Education, has been nominated as a finalist for the NSW/ACT Careers Adviser of the Year award. This nomination is the highest honour afforded to a small selection of Careers Advisers each year by the Careers Adviser Association of NSW and ACT who represent over 800 Careers Advisers from Government, Catholic and Independent High Schools in NSW and ACT.
The nomination recognises elite Careers Advisers who are excelling in the implementation and delivery of Career Development Education in their school as well as those who have dedicated their time to supporting their Career Adviser colleagues to deliver excellence in their own role.
[caption id="attachment_46434" align="alignright" width="230"] Juliana Dignam[/caption]
Juliana has worked tirelessly since being appointed to her role at St Edward’s in the organisation and implementation of a Careers Education and Vocational Training program which is of the highest quality. She is committed to ensuring that St Edward’s leads the way in this educational domain, constantly seeking opportunities to benefit our boys in their preparation of post school pathways. Her recent achievements include in 2023, the Inaugural St Edward’s Careers Expo which was held at the College earlier this year where exhibitors from University, TAFE, employment agencies, local companies in a range of trades and professions, the Defence Force and Police Services were exhibitors for Catholic School students on the Central Coast to attend. In 2022 Juliana introduced the Year 10 End of Year Pathways Program, mock interviews for Year 10 students with members of the local community volunteering to assist students in preparation for part time and full-time work and the introduction of a timetabled Careers Education program in Year 10.
Juliana has developed great connections and partnerships with many local industries and assisted many students in the attainment of apprenticeships. She coordinates our School Based Traineeships and the external study of courses though TAFE for students as part of their HSC pattern of study.
The ultimate winner of this award will be announced at a ceremony in October this year and we wish Juliana every success in this process.

Parent Tips
With Father’s day fast approaching, this one is for the dads and male role models in your child’s life.
We understand that being a dad comes with its fair share of challenges, and it's natural to feel stressed or anxious from time to time. But guess what? You are far from alone in this journey! We are here to support you every step of the way.
This week, we want to share some effective tips to help you manage feelings of stress and anxiety.
Remember, taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your little ones. As the saying goes, you need to secure your own oxygen mask before others.
Top Tips
Breathe it out: When you feel overwhelmed, take a moment to focus on your breath. Deep breathing exercises can help calm your mind and reduce stress.
Find your support system: Connect with other dads or caregivers who can relate to your experiences. Sharing your thoughts and feelings with others can provide valuable support and perspective. A Dads Group is a great place for this! Learn more about Dads Groups here
Prioritise self-care: Make time for activities that recharge and rejuvenate you. Whether it's going for a walk, enjoying a hobby, or simply taking a relaxing bath, remember to prioritise self-care.
