The Latest from the HSIE Faculty
Year 9 and 10 Commerce: ASX Sharemarket Game 2025
Our Year 9 and 10 Commerce students recently participated in Game 1 of the 2025 ASX Sharemarket Game, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in the world of investing. Each student syndicate was given $50,000 in virtual capital to trade over a 15-week period using live market data.
With access to over 300 ASX-listed companies, 55 Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), and 5 Listed Investment Companies (LICs), students explored investment strategies, navigated market volatility, and refined their decision-making skills. The experience brought financial literacy to life and deepened students’ understanding of the sharemarket in a dynamic and practical way.
Congratulations to all participants for their enthusiasm and growth—and to the HSIE faculty for fostering such meaningful learning opportunities!

Year 12 Economics: 2025 Online Student Conference
Thank you to all the students, teachers, and guest speakers who made the 2025 Year 12 Economics Online Student Conference such a valuable and engaging experience! Throughout the day, students explored Australia’s economic landscape through expert-led sessions on monetary and fiscal policy, the federal budget, global economic trends, and key domestic issues.
Highlights included:
Michael Plumb from the RBA unpacking current monetary policy and economic conditions.
Brad Matthews breaking down the 2025–26 Federal Budget in plain English.
Tim Riley offering insights into Australia’s global economic position.
Peter Kennedy exploring the major economic challenges facing Australia today.
The conference sparked thoughtful questions, deepened understanding, and inspired students to think critically about the economic forces shaping their world.

Year 11 Ancient History: Mummifying Bananas
As part of their study of Tutankhamun and ancient Egyptian burial practices, Year 11 Ancient History students took part in a creative, hands-on activity: mummifying bananas.
The boys approached the task with curiosity and focus, carefully working through each stage of the mummification process—from symbolic organ removal to drying and wrapping. Their thoughtful application of historical knowledge, combined with a willingness to get involved, made the activity both meaningful and memorable.
This practical experience not only deepened their understanding of ancient Egyptian rituals and beliefs but also sparked lively discussion and reflection. It was a fun and effective way to bring the ancient world to life in the classroom.
These diverse and engaging activities reflect the HSIE faculty’s commitment to delivering high-impact, real-world learning that connects students with the past, present, and future.

Careers With Stem
Click the links below to read the latest information regarding Careers with STEM.
The OECD has just published their 2025 State of Global Teenage Career Preparation report, drawing on data from over 690,000 students across 80 countries. This report provides valuable insights into how student make their job choices.
The bad news
The job options that teens are considering haven’t really changed since the last report (in 2000!).
There’s a mismatch between the jobs that students think they want, and the careers that are actually available.
Many students are scared they’ll pick the wrong job.
The good news
The job options that teens actually have are evolving rapidly and there’s huge opportunity.
Too few students are participating in the career development activities that are most strongly linked to better employment outcomes.
The career development opportunities that matter most involve connecting with real people.

What do Jenna Ortega and maths have in common? She was wearing it at the 2025 Met Gala!
The Met Gala is known for pushing boundaries in art and fashion, with this year’s theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” and “Tailored for you”. It’s a theme Jenna took literally as she graced the red carpets with her striking metal ruler dress created by Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing.
Jenna’s dress shows fashion’s deep connection to maths, revealing how numbers enable designers and pattern makers to create art we love to judge. Want to take your first step into a career in fashion and design?

Injured Students and Friday Activity Attendance
If a student is injured and unable to participate in their regular Friday activity, there are a few options available.
These are designed to ensure students remain engaged and continue to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour during this time:
Attend and observe their scheduled sport activity: Students are encouraged to support their homeroom class by attending and observing their usual activity. They are expected to remain with their group, behave appropriately, and follow staff instructions throughout the session.
Work independently in the library: Students may choose to work quietly in the library alongside senior students. This option is best suited to those who are able to manage their time effectively and work independently on classwork, revision, or reading. No formal lessons are offered during this time. This must be arranged in advance through their Pastoral Leader.
Go home at lunchtime (with prior arrangement): In some cases due to the nature of the injury, families may prefer to collect their son at lunchtime. This must be arranged in advance through their son’s pastoral leader, and students are expected to leave the campus promptly and responsibly under the direct supervision of a parent.
We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a safe, respectful, and productive environment for all students.
