Social Justice News and Annual Christmas Appeal
St Edward’s is proud to enjoy an ongoing connection with Vinnies and Coast Shelter.
Our aim again this year will be to provide more than 100 hampers for food items, to provide a Christmas lunch for our local disadvantaged people.
Your son will be asked to bring in particular items to his Homeroom teacher over the next few weeks. Every person in the College community is asked to make a contribution, even if it is simply a tin of canned food eg ham, turkey, or soft drinks, biscuits, chips, bon bons etc. Boys will be asked to bring in items, in year cohorts, so that we create balanced hampers. This is not a toy drive, but rather a meal for a family to share and enjoy.
The College thanks Amy Luttrell and her team at Bunnings Erina, for their ongoing assistance to us each year, by providing the bags for the hampers.
Please feel welcome to contact me at the College if you have any questions about our Christmas Appeal. pdell@stedwards.nsw.edu.au
Phil Glendenning
The College was privileged to have the Leader of the Edmund Rice Centre for Justice, Sydney, Phil Glendenning at Friday’s assembly. Phil is a nationally and internationally leading voice in Human Rights and Social Justice. His talk passionately urged our boys to become men of action, to side with our most disadvantaged groups eg Reconciliation, Refugees.

What’s Been Happening in Performing Arts
Semester 2 has been a busy and exciting time in the Performing Arts Faculty with classroom and whole school performances, Year 11 Vet Entertainment work placement and HSC performances in both Music and Drama.
After performing at the inspiring HSC Music evening in Term 3 and Concert for Year 8 our Year 12 Music students were well and truly ready to sit for their practical examinations in Week 9. All our Performing Arts students from Drama and Music are to be congratulated on their commitment and dedication to developing and refining their practical skills. To complete live performances under exam conditions is an exceptional achievement and one which all students should be very proud of.
In Term 3 we also hosted a Drama Immersion Day for Year 8 students run by Swoop Physical Theatre and our own team of dedicated teachers. More recently a lunchtime Drama Club has been established for Year 7 and 8 students run by Ms Atayde on Monday’s in the Drama room.
Practice rooms have been busy all term and it’s great to see the junior students coming down to use Practice Room 4. Lunchtimes are a buzz with the lingering tunes of a vast range of genres as students make use of the wonderful facilities and hone their ensemble skills.
Year 7 are busy learning about the impact of Music in Film and TV, Year 8 spent the first few weeks of Term 4 busting out the Blues and developing their small ensemble skills and Year 9 through their topic on Film Music, composed pieces including sound effects for a movie trailer where some outstanding work was completed and the boys really enjoying this unit of work. Year 10 completed their compositions in the Jazz style and have just completed their last performance task with some excellent pieces and a really strong development of their ensemble skills is evident. Year 11 having completed their Preliminary course last term with some exceptional performances and are getting ready for their first performance task in the HSC Course.
Our combined St Edward’s/St Joseph’s Concert band has been busy performing at several big school calendar events including the Semester 1 Academic awards assembly and a performance at St Joseph’s where St Patrick's Year 6 students attended. They are currently preparing a tour of feeder schools and performance at Erina Fair on 24 November. Congratulations to these wonderful musicians, it has been great to hear them performing to a wide audience and tackling some exciting repertoire. A big thank you to Mrs Selena Maloney for her dedication and enthusiasm, accompanying the boys to their weekly rehearsals and their performances.
Vet Entertainment students began the term with work placement at The Skilled Creative where the boys developed their skills at scripting, editing and completing podcasts which went to air. They also continue to form an important part of all performance events at the College lending their skills to staging activities. Screen and Media students will begin to further develop their scripting, filming and editing skills as they make the first of three video tasks for their HSC course.
As we near the end of the year some of our musicians are getting ready to perform at the Academic Awards Ceremony and will also soon be in rehearsal for our Liturgies.
All in all it has been great to see so many students performing after the restrictions of the last two years and we look forward to this growing in 2023.

Fun and Friendship at the Year 7 Camp
Over three adventurous days, Year 7 embarked on their first St Edward’s College School Camp.
On Wednesday 2 November, students travelled to Crosslands Reserve in Hornsby Heights where they crossed Berowra Creek on the barge ready for a busy three days of outdoor activities. The boys stepped out of their comfort zone and faced their fears by abseiling natural rock walls, traversing across river bridges and battling the high ropes. Students explored the waterways on canoes and stand-up paddle boards and tried their hand at raft building! We were extremely proud of how well the boys banded together to share their skills and support each other through each task.
The nights were spent in cabins and tents where the boys gained experienced erecting and taking down their tent, organising their things and tidying up after each night. After each busy day, half the boys relaxed by the campfire, while the other half enjoyed a movie or some games as a group.
We are extremely proud of the resilience and sportsmanship displayed by the boys, as well as the care and support they showed each other during moments of vulnerability. We hope the boys enjoyed their time at camp and have some memories that will last a life time.

Drama Club
Ms Atayde from the English faculty has started a Drama Club at the College, taking place fortnightly during lunch. Students from Years 7, 8 and 9 come together in the Drama Space to play improvisation and team building games. The aim of the club is to build confidence in performance skills and speech delivery.
Each year group in English either study a play or deliver a speech throughout their time at the school. Year 7 study excerpts from Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer’s Nights Dream’ as well as a variety of other drama texts; Year 8 deliver a speech based on the film ‘Hunt For the Wilderpeople’ with one option being the delivery of a monologue; Year 9 study Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’; Year 10 study a variety of plays ranging from Shakespeare to more contemporary plays like ‘Away’ by Michael Gow, while Year 11 and 12 Advanced English focus on the Shakespearean History plays. It is hoped that this early exposure to drama, the codes, conventions and fun of the genre will establish an understanding of the skills needed for dramatic study.
Students are encouraged to be as creative, and of course, as dramatic as they like during the club. The creation of different characters and scenarios has been the focus so far as well as working as a group to create scenes. Moving forward, students will develop their theatre sports skills and create short skits working with scripts, props, and lighting. In Drama Club students are encouraged to be loud, energetic and think outside the box. Ms Atayde said she was pleased with the level of enthusiasm and engagement from the students who had attended the club so far and she is looking forward to the group growing and developing into 2023.
The Drama Club doors are always open! No experience is necessary – you just need an interest in Drama and English plus a sense of excitement. If you would like to see what Drama Club is all about, please join us Monday’s Week B at lunch time in the Drama Space.

Year 9 English Voice of Resistance
Year 9 English have been studying ‘The Voice of Resistance’ this term, leading up to their final assessment task.
The module is design to allow students to draw on real world examples of people who have raised their voices to resist injustice and inequality across the world. Class teachers, working with the students, selected a number of interesting people and texts to focus on in order to extend and consolidate knowledge and understanding of this issue. Malala Youstafazi and Greta Thunberg were among two well-known females who were recognised as raising awareness for issues affecting young people in the world today. Malala Youstafazi is an advocate for the education of young people while Greta Thunberg has drawn attention to the issue of global environmental destruction. Students were asked to share their opinions on these issues in the classroom leading to some thought-provoking discussions.
In addition to these people, students also studied a variety of poetry highlighting the idea of resistance. Luke Lesson’s contemporary spoken word poem ‘Please Resist Me’ outlined a history of racial discrimination and how powerfully resistance can be flipped and used against oppressors. Bei Dao’s poem ‘Requiem’, which commemorates the Tiananmen Square massacre in China, was also examined as a way of drawing attention to peaceful resistance versus violent resistance. Students were engaged at each step of the module, leading to an in-depth analysis of the issue and the impacts it can have.
The assessment task asked students to draw a symbolic representation of the concept of resistance and then write an explanation of their image, detailing the construction of their image. The students came up with some original and impressive designs. Included below are three examples of the work students produced.

Year 12 2023 – English Studies
It’s hard to believe that it is Term 4 already and we are getting ready for the long Christmas break. However, there is no slowing down for the 2023 HSC year group who are starting their HSC pattern of study in English this term.
Mrs Titheradge’s Year 12 English Studies class have just commenced the common module titled ‘Texts and Human Experiences’. Their core text for the module is the film ‘Billy Elliot’. The class have already completed their introduction to the module by discussing what human experiences are and what impact they have on us and the world around us. They have also viewed the film and have started to think about the ways that the characters interact with each other through the essential human experiences they go through in the film.
Last week, the class studied the song ‘Standing Outside The Fire’ by Garth Brooks as an example of a related text for the film. Students watched the film clip, listened to the song and studied the lyrics as a way of understanding that human experiences, while encountered by everybody, can affect different people in different ways. The English Studies course allows teachers and students the freedom of engaging with relevant and interesting texts like songs as a way of capturing interest and extending ideas. The course is targeted at those students who enjoy English but who do not necessarily want to pursue a university education after finishing their HSC. Students can select from an ATAR or non-ATAR pattern of study depending on their needs and interests. It allows students to develop genuine and authentic skills that will sustain them in the real world and develop their knowledge of the world around them.
Mrs Titheradge’s class is a diverse and enthusiastic English class who bring their strengths and personalities to the classroom every day. They are privileged to have Mrs Annie Lynn in the classroom with them, supporting their learning journey and treating everyone to her amazing baking skills on a regular basis. The class is coming together as a strong unit keen to do well and regularly contribute to class discussions as a way of extending and consolidating their knowledge. Both Mrs Titheradge and Mrs Lynn look forward to the next 12 months with the class.

Wombats Cup – Central Coast Water Polo
Wombats Cup - Central Coast Secondary Schools Water Polo Tournament 2022
This was a FUNtastic day where new players got the opportunity to have a go at Water Polo against Independent, Catholic and Government schools, guided by more experienced water polo teammates. The support from the local club from Woy Woy saw a well-run tournament with 8 girls and 6 boys teams having a ball in the water.
St Edward's had many close games and had a cracking grand final to take home the trophy!! It was an exciting finish with a draw at full time and then Golden Goal extra time (first team to score wins). The ball went up and back the pool a few times before Bryn O’Grady-Cousins drew the Goal Keeper to one side of the goal then cross passed to Harry Rutherford who scored a beautiful off the hand tap in! What an awesome team goal.

Downie Trophy – Cricket
Our Downie Trophy Opens team had a tough selection period due to the unpredictable weather conditions. We would like to thank all for wanting to be involved and trying out for the team, it was tough trying to select 13 players.
We had the bye in Round 1 but faced St Peter's Catholic College in Round 2. After winning the toss and selecting to bowl, it is fair to say that we dominated from ball one. Fynn Newell and Matt Toohey opened the bowling taking quick wickets and bowling fast, while Lachlan Carlyle bowled a tight spell with his leg spin. St Peter's batted for 26 overs, only scoring 16 runs, as the boys gave them nothing in the field as they took all their chances.
Alex Cutting and Cameron Wehrle chased down the runs in 11 balls. Off to Round 3!
For Round 3, we played MacKillop Catholic College. Again, we won the toss and chose to bowl. A great opening spell from Fynn Newell (5/8) and Angus Jack (0/10) put us on the front foot. Rayden Gomes, Alex Cutting, Lachlan Carlyle, and Liam Roche shared the remaining wickets as Ken Foneska had one of the best runouts you will see. We bowled MacKillop out for 87 off 33 overs, again a strong performance in the field.
We lost a couple of quick wickets but passed their total with ease. Liam Roche (22), Rayden Gomes (32*) and Alex Cutting (24*) batted well to consolidate the innings after a tough start. Off to Round 4!
Round 4 is yet to be played, but more information to come. We have a strong side so it will be interesting to see how far we make it in this competition.
The squad is as follows:
Rayden Gomez, Alex Cutting, Angus Jack, Cameron Wehrle, John James, Liam Roache, Koby Salter, Ken Fonseka, Levi Bailey, Matt Toohey, Fynn Newell, Lachlan Carlyle, Tom Fenton

The Fathering Project
Hi Dads, father figures and significant male role models,
Finding balance in every aspect of your life is key to your wellbeing and living a happy and fulfilling life.
This is especially important when it comes to work life balance. Taking time to reflect on how you can make it happen when you're a dad is important for yourself, your kids and family.
Research shows 85% of dads aspire to fully share parenting with their spouses, however only 30% report that they actually get to do this.
Making changes to your work may not yet be possible, but it's worth thinking about how you might aim to adjust or negotiate your work to be more flexible in the future.
Top Tips to help you reflect
Your children are only young once. Remember that work will always be there, but time flies and your children grow quickly.
Put family first. Whenever there is a clash between work and family, family comes first.
Be a good role model. You are an important role model for their work ethic in the future, and also for their work-life balance. Consider the example you are setting for your kids.
Dad joke of the week
The salesman at the furniture store said "You will seat five people without any problems..."I said, "Where am I going to find five people without any problems...?!"
