The Latest News from the HSIE Faculty
Year 12 Ancient, Modern and Extension History HSC Lecture
On Thursday 1 June, the Year 12 Ancient, Modern and Extension History students travelled down by train to the University of Sydney to attend a HSC lecture study day with other students across NSW.
In university fashion, students had the freedom to elect lectures that suited their study needs and hear from expert HSC markers, syllabus writers and teachers in a bid to hone their critical thinking and writing skills in the lead up to the Trial HSC.
Year 12 Business Studies Excursion
On Tuesday 6 June, the Year 12 Business Studies classes made a second attempt to travel up to Cardiff to visit the Tony White Motor Trade Group. This time, the weather and traffic were in our favour.
Part of the HSC Business Studies course requires students to examine and explore various areas of business Management including Operations, Marketing, Financial and Human Resources. The Tony White Group offered the students a firsthand account on how a large corporation organises its key functions and the impact these have on the running of the privately owned business. The students also learnt how various external influences have impacted this business and the strategies they use to accommodate these. The business students were keen to learn about the level of coordination and organisation that goes into making a large business, such as the Tony White Group successful.
Year 12 gained a deeper insight into this organisation’s operations, marketing, finance, and human resource sectors. The boys actively involved themselves and showed a keenness to learn throughout the presentation. They asked a range of questions, took notes, toured the three dealerships on the Cardiff campus as well as found the time to examine the different cars for sale.
The information on the Tony White Motor Trade Group is invaluable as Year 12 work towards their Trial Exams in Term 3 and the HSC Examination in Term 4.
A special thanks to Mr Speziale for driving the bus up to Cardiff and to the Year 12 boys for being great ambassadors for St Edward's College.
Years 8, 9 and 10
Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 are finishing their study of History and will begin their Geography course work in Semester 2. Excitingly this term, students have been very creative in their assessment tasks. This includes Year 10 building websites, podcasts, multimodal and exhibition spaces to showcase the experience of an Australian Vietnam soldier. In Year 9, students had the choice to choose an element of both world wars and create a similarity and differences comparison study. Finally, in Year 8, students showed their artistic flair designing posters detailing grisly details of the Black Death in Europe. See Year 8 students' work to the right and below.
For Geography next semester, we plan on doing plenty of fieldwork as students will be engaging with the world around them and finding solutions big and small to the range of challenges we face as a community.

Josie Mitchell Debating Competition
This term our junior debating team attended the Josie Mitchell Debating Competition held at St Brigid’s Catholic College.
This event had schools from all over the Central Coast participate in a one-day competition to see who would take home the annual trophy. The boys partook in three debates on the day, two prepared and one impromptu, and all spoke with confidence. After an early win in the first round the boys needed to secure a second win to progress to the finals. Unfortunately, they lost this debate to St Joseph's College who went on to win the competition. In their final debate, they gained momentum and challenged themselves to speak with minimal assistance from notes and did a wonderful job. Congratulations to Harry Evans, Beau Louie, Ben Weisbaum, and Lorenzo Arango on representing the College – you should all be very proud of your efforts!
A special mention to Jayden Redfern from Year 12 who adjudicated the debates on the day. Jayden took the lead in his adjudicating role and offered great insight and feedback to all speakers. It was fantastic to have such an experienced mentor helping junior students improve their debating and speaking skills.

College Athletics Carnival
The College Athletics Carnival was run and won on Tuesday 30 May at Adcock Park.
We could not have asked for a better day. Wonderful weather and a combination of students who embraced the carnival atmosphere and enthusiastically represented their Houses.
There we many highlights during the day:
Mr Griffin challenging Will Browning and Keenan White in the Opens 1500m race. His early race pace would be his downfall. He chased redemption, later in the day in the 400m, with a more conservative strategy, seeing him fly home in second place.
Noah Nakagawa setting a new record in Opens 100m heats with a time of 11.37sec.
Zane Smith challenging the Opens High Jump Record (1.92m), a late change of shoes couldn’t get him above the bar.
The overall behaviour and level of participation across the age groups.
We also crowned the following Age Champions:
Under 12: Ewan McHale - Spillane
Under 13: Jamie Vernon - Shanahan
Under 14: Owen Clark - Spillane
Under 15: Kallum Moggs - Knights
Under 16: Cooper Jones - Knights
Opens: Lincoln Markulin - Knights
Overall, the day was won by Knights (Green House) on 1247 points, with Spillane (Red House) on 1106, Doolan (White House) on 962 and Shanahan (Blue House) on 896.

NSW All Schools Swimming
Congratulations to our boys who participated in this carnival, representing CSNSW.
On Thursday, 1 June, our Intermediate Medley Relay Team consisting of Tahj Regattieri in Backstroke, Lucas Jarman in Breaststroke, Lachlan Bunney in Butterfly, and Archie Carpenter in Freestyle swam an impressive race, finishing 6th with a time of 2:01:07.
On the Friday, Tahj participated in his individual races: 50m, 100m, and 200m Backstroke. Although he wasn't particularly satisfied with his times or results, reaching this level of competition was a remarkable accomplishment.

Open Rugby League
Gala Days are a tough way to progress in competitive sports.
On Wednesday 7 June, the Open Rugby League team contested the Central Coast City Cup at Morry Breen Oval, Kanwal.
A chilly and dew soaked oval was one of the many challenges facing the boys. We knew from the start that a win against Terrigal High School would qualify us, via our pool, for the grand final. The issue was just two, 12 minute halves (no stoppage time) and the knowledge that if we didn’t start well, it would be hard to come back. Unfortunately, we did just that. A few early mistakes and simply trying too hard, led to Terrigal scoring first. Tom Whitmore blew out his boot, something I had never seen before in all my time as a coach. It seemed like it just wasn’t our day. It took us most of the first half to find our mojo. We scored a slick try and momentum seemed to be turning our way. Unfortunately, halftime sounded soon after (the half reduced due to a late start).
In the second half, we tried to find the much needed try to clinch the match. The harder we tried, the more we pushed the pass or dropped the ball. Terrigal hung in there and were rewarded with a late try to win the match.
The result put an end to our chances of progressing via the Central Coast pathway this year. In our final game, we faced Gosford High School. Given the opposition, we experimented with our starting team. The boys embraced the changes and scored a comfortable win (22-8), with the focus being more on attack than defence.
On days like these, you need a bit of luck to progress. Sometimes the better team doesn't always win, and today was an example of that. Needless to say, the boys were fantastic ambassadors for the College.
Our team included:
Zane Smith, Byron Marks, Blaine McIntosh, Harry Bates, Hunter Mussalli, Sean Bullen, Zac Stracker, Sione Ofahengaue, Malachi Smith, Cooper McBride, Kieran Dafter, Tom Whitmore, Ethan Cohen, Jonah Wright, Sunny McRae, Kaelan Markey, Kieran White, and Brayden O’Leary.
A special mention to Kurt Halls who assisted both the Opens and Under 14’s teams on the day.

Years 9 and 10 All Schools Touch Football
On Thursday 8 June, the boys travelled as a team to Wallsend to play against schools from both the Central Coast and Hunter Regions.
A cold and very dew soaked oval confronted the boys at the start of the day. We played Tomaree High School in our first game. The conditions meant the boys focused more on ball handling, rather than attacking touch. Josh Brown and Luke Shereb used their speed and guile to break down the Tomaree defence and score some slick tries. We eventually won 4-1.
A second-round bye, allowed the grounds to finally dry-up and allowed the boys to play some football. Our games were now lined-up with a game on, game off situation. We comfortably beat Taree High School 7-1, Hunter River High School 8-1 and St Bede’s Catholic College Chisholm 6-1. The results saw us come out top of our pool and progress to the knockout rounds.
In our quarter-final we came up against a quality St Pius X High School, Adamstown team. They started quickly and scored in the opening set. We found our rhythm soon after and raced to a 4-1 lead. However, they just would not go away and levelled the game in the final minute. Josh Brown stepped up again (as he had all day) and controlled our restart set, working up field. With time counting down, he created space for the match winner.
A late change to the draw saw us now play the highly fancied Hunter Sports High in the semi-final. Hunter got out to a fast start and scored two quick tries. The boys found some rhythm and the result was some great end-to-end play. We clawed one back and then fatigue (from us and the referees) saw a few contentious calls go against us. We were unable to recover, and Hunter ran out winners 5-1.
While disappointed, the boys did a great job given the number of games they played back-to-back in this gruelling format.
The team consisted of:
Josh Brown, Luke Shereb, Caleb Petersen, Kyan Werner, Kobi Flanders, Zach Herring, Fletcher Sommerville, Archie Carpenter, Sam Logan, Donovan Wright, Cooper Jones and Kevin Matthews.

Under 14 Rugby League
The Under 14’s boys played in the Cochran Cup at Morrie Breen Oval for a chance to advance to the next round in Port Macquarie.
The first game was a tough affair against MacKillop Catholic College, where a scorching James Boerner try earned the boys a 10-all draw at full-time. In the second game against Central Coast Sports School the boys aimed up and ran away with a 12-6 win to set up a winner-takes-all match against St Peter's Catholic College. With a strong start, we held on to a 12-6 lead at half-time thanks to some great kicks by Jack Humphries and Nixon Lavin to set up our first half tries. The second half was a tough affair and St Peter's eventually ran out winners 16-12 at the death. The boys all represented the College like true Eddies boys and can all hold their heads up high after a tough day out at the Cochran Cup.
The Team:
Silas Allen, Daniel Bates, James Boerner, Toby Carr, Owen Clark, Billy Fennell, Noah Gattringer, Jack Humphries, TJ Mahoney, Kaden Morgan, Toby Newport, Matt Norman, Cruiz Parke, Cooper Smith, AJ Tillott, Kyston Treble, Xavier Turner, Isaac Wheatley, Nixon Yarnold

Parent Tips
As our kids grow up and show they can be trusted to follow the rules, we can let them have a say in setting the guidelines - giving them more responsibility for their own behaviour.
For instance, they can negotiate with you on when they'll do their chores or how much screen time they can have during the week versus the weekend.
Instead of just having strict rules, using the term "agreement" suggests a more flexible and negotiated approach.
It gives your kids a chance to be part of the decision-making process, and the cool thing is that when they're involved in the negotiation, they're more likely to stick to the agreements. Sometimes, they even suggest tougher consequences than you would have!
By negotiating agreements with your older child, you can teach them self-discipline and also let them prove to you that they're responsible.
Top Tips
Discuss and negotiate agreements according to the age of each child. As they get older demonstrate that you are listening to and appreciating their growing need for more independence.
Be firm, fair and consistent in applying agreements and consequences once you have all established your agreements.
Praise. Generously praise responsible behaviour. Let them know you are proud of the way they are honouring the agreements and showing maturity.

Men’s Health
Men’s health - a topic that is often swept under the carpet.
Let’s talk more and understand that self-care is very important! Otherwise, where will we get the energy to look after and live a happy healthy life with our loved ones?
It's Men's Health Week! It's the perfect time to remind ourselves about the importance of taking care of our overall wellbeing.
Wellbeing is about feeling comfortable, healthy, and happy. It's about finding that sweet spot where we're not only functioning well but also experiencing positive emotions and have a sense of purpose.
To be the best dad you can be, it's crucial to make your own health and wellbeing a priority. Sure, focusing on a healthy lifestyle by exercising and eating right is fantastic for your body, but remember that balanced living goes beyond just the physical aspects. It's about protecting your mental and emotional health too!
Top Tips
