Computing Studies
It has been a very busy start to 2022 for the Computing Studies classes this year. We have managed to get classes across all subjects and have been joined once again by students from St Joseph's College in Industrial Technology (Multimedia). It is great to see the students back in the classroom and enjoying using just some of the equipment we have available.
Year 12 Information Process and Technology have been very busy designing their computer network. The boys are given plans and must use their knowledge, and a whole lot of research, to plan and design a computer network. They are given a budget of around $1 000 000 and generally they see just what a structure takes to get up to standard. Some great work has been handed in and I look forward to reading through so many of the creative ideas the boys come up with.
Year 12 Industrial Technology (Multimedia) have been hard at work on their Industry Study reports and working towards their check-ins of their major works at the end of Term. The Industry Study takes the form of a multimodal presentation outlining the features and components of the workplace as well as the technical and organisational factors. The Multimedia Industry has so many moving parts, quite often the students are very surprised by the range of careers and roles available in the industry.
2022 has seen the return of Software Design in Year 11. We have quite a large class and many budding software developers. So far, we have been developing some organisational skills and gaining an understanding as to how data is used and managed by the hardware and software. Our upcoming tasks include building dual boot pc’s and installing applications remotely before embarking on a Python mission.
In the Junior years of 9 and 10 the boys are working hard on projects. Year 10 are writing, editing, and producing a TV commercial. As part of the task, they learn to understand the role of storyboards, scripts, and even camera filming techniques. In the second stage of the project, they will learn the postproduction side of digital media and edit the commercial and add effects in Adobe After Effects.
Finally, the younger members of our subject are starting on their journey using HTML5 and CSS. They are creating websites that can be skinned with a new CSS design giving a very different look and feel, they all seem to be enjoying the challenge and trying to make the page design match their own thinking. A great start for our Year 9 students.
We look forward to a very busy and productive year.

Year 7 Understanding the EREA Touchstones
Recently Year 7 have been developing an understanding of the EREA Touchstones at the beginning of their learning journey at St Edward’s.
During the learning process the boys created their own definition of each touchstone, provided examples of how they use the touchstones in their own lives and then shared why they think the touchstones are important. The final part of this work was to use the graphic design program Canva to share their learning.

Under 15’s Touch Football
Broken Bay Under 15's Touch Football 2022 – Doyalson 16 February, 2022
The Broken Bay Touch Football Championships were held in Week 3 of Term 1 at Doyalson. Twelve boys nominated to play in the competition and that made the selection process very easy. The following boys representing the College at the Broken Bay school championships: Samuel Flakus, Byron Marks, Luke Shereb, Josh Brown, Oscar Mahoney, Archie Mesritz , Samuel Logan, Fletcher Sommerville , Blade Marquart, Archie Carpenter, Oscar Mahoney and Andrew Hansen.
Captained by Samuel Flakus, the team moved confidently through their pool games and had three convincing wins to begin the tournament. The first game was against St Peter's Catholic College and the boys powered to a 10-0 win. The second game against Mater Maria Catholic College was tougher with the final score of 5-1. The team then focussed on the final pool game against St Leo's Catholic College which they won comfortably 8-2.
The semi-final was against MacKillop Catholic College and the boys tightened their defence and came away winners 6-2.
Advancing to the final allowed us to compete against St Augustine’s Catholic College, who defeated us in the final last year. The St Edward's team started very well and quickly took a 2-0 lead after 5 minutes of play. As the final progressed, St Augustine’s challenged our defence but as they scored, so did we and a two try buffer was maintained throughout the game.
The best player’s award on the day was to the captain, Sam Flakus, who led from the front and was positive in all that he did on the field.
After a possible/probable trial was held on the day, the following boys were selected for the Broken Bay Under 15's team to contest the NSWCCC championships later this year: Samuel Flakus, Byron Marks, Luke Shereb, Archie Mesritz, Josh Brown.

College Swimming Carnival
In what was the start of this period of wonderful weather, the College swimming carnival was certainly run on a day to remember.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms delayed the start of the day and the carnival. Gosford pool staff were charged with deciding on when we could be in the pool, when to get out and how long to stay out. Eventually we got the carnival started, at times it was stop/start, we had to be creative in our organisation, but in the end, we ran enough events to select our team for the Broken Bay (BBSSSA) carnival on Monday 21 March.

Due to the constant interruptions throughout the day, our Under 16's and Open's teams were decided amongst the Age Groups and only races for Relay positions were contested.
A big thank you to the staff in attendance on the day for their adaptability and composure in tough conditions. I’d also like to thank the boys for their wonderful behaviour and attitude in dealing with the conditions on the day.

Parenting Ideas – Free Webinar
Upcoming Parent Webinar - Building Lasting Happiness in Children
When you ask parents what they want for their kids, by far the most common reply is “I just want them to be happy”. And though this desire goes hand-in-hand with such things as good health, an education and a safe place to call home, happiness is a really difficult area for parents to navigate or seek assistance with. Nobody denies the importance of happiness, but how many parents have ever been shown how to model and implement it? In this webinar, Dr Jodi Richardson explains how lifelong happiness stems from how we think and what we do, rather than from what we have.
