Tribute to Year 12

St Edward’s College takes great pride and appreciates the important responsibility we have as a community in supporting families in building good young men of the future. We challenge ourselves and our boys to be the best they can possibly be in all endeavours. At the centre of our vision for education as a faith community, we constantly strive to provide an innovative, holistic and liberating education which challenges, nurtures and inspires the boys who arrive at our doors in Year 7, to become young men who leave our gates at the end of Year 12 who are aspirational regarding their future, who have achieved their personal best, developing the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to flourish in an ever changing world. Young men who are socially conscious, countercultural in their thinking and are empowered to contribute positively to society through the promotion of inclusivity, justice and solidarity. Young men who are spiritually enriched, contemplative about their place in this world and in their connection with God. Young men who are proud of their Edmund Rice Education, who will continue in life to become good partners, fathers and members of society who are committed to the Gospel values inherent in the touchstones which underpin this vision.

As our graduating class has reached the end of their time at St Edward’s, I believe it is important that we acknowledge the outstanding young men of this cohort. We and their families should be very proud of the fine young men that they have become. Throughout what has been a difficult year for everyone, these young men have shone. Their resilience commitment and sense of purpose throughout the adversity that they have experienced has seen them grow into young men who epitomise the values that we hold dear as a community. In many ways they will leave a legacy for future students to aspire to. They have been wonderfully led by an outstanding Prefect group, supported by Mr Beattie, Mr Herringe and many of their teachers in creating a strong student voice throughout our community on many social justice issues such as racism, respectful relationships, mental health and environmental sustainability. The Prefect group will forever be remembered for their work in the introduction of SECTV and their outstanding leadership of the College Portfolios. Many young men in the year group have supported these initiatives while also maintaining focus on their academic achievements. We look forward to their final results, but fully understand that these results will not be the sole factor that defines their contribution to our community.

Today we farewelled these young men in a manner which will be unique to their year group, due to the COVID-19 restrictions. We celebrated Mass together, which was followed by an Academic Assembly witnessed by Year 11 students and lunch with staff.  The major awards were announced at this assembly and each student received their College Portfolio. The list of major Award winners appears below.

I wish every young man graduating today, a life which is full of love, happiness and self-fulfilment.

Year 2020-2021 College Captains and Vice Captains

On Friday September 14, we celebrated the appointment of the 2020/21 Prefects with a Mass and special blessing at St Patrick’s Parish Church in East Gosford. It gave me great pleasure to announce the newly elected Captain and Vice Captains as part of this ceremony. I would like to congratulate Kai Wheelock on his appointment to the role of College Captain and Sam Beatson and Joshua Zaia, to the position of Vice Captains. Kai, Sam and Josh were elected through a process of written application, shortlisting and panel interviews. Kai, Sam and Josh are outstanding young men and I look forward to working with them over the coming year.

End of term break

I would like to wish all students and their families a very restful, happy and safe end of term break. The two-week holiday provides a great opportunity for students to recharge the batteries prior to the commencement of the final term for the year. Term 4 will resume on Monday 12 October for staff and students.
