On Monday 12 March, Mrs McDonald and Mr Speziale took 12 members of the Opens Touch Football team to Doyalson RSL Ovals to compete in the Broken Bay selections for the Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) team.
Our first game was against St Augustine’s, Brookvale with a strongly contested 2 all draw. Kyle Lang and John Saley scored our tries. Tom Sawyer was the king of intercepts as he defended our line with great tenacity. Alex Halls was also excellent in defense, putting his body on the line with great dives.
Our second game was against St Paul’s, Manly, with St Edward’s winning 4-1. Quick play balls and good driving ensured a successful outcome with the boys throwing great cut-out passes to keep the opposition on their toes.
The third game was against St Peter’s, Tuggerah and the boys were exceptional in defense, ensuring the opposition remained scoreless. Sandon Smith had great ball carrying skills and scored 2 tries in our 6-0 win. Mason Jones had good hands and great passing skills to allow his team mates to control the game.
In the quarter finals we met a younger team from St Brigid’s, Lake Munmorah. The boys were very relaxed and threw the ball around, splitting the defense. Quick dumps and fast scoops allowed the game to flow quickly with the St Edward’s team winning 10-0. Alex Halls scoring 4 great tries.
We again met St Paul’s, Manly in the semi finals, with another outstanding win to St Edward’s, coming away with a 6-0 win. There were some great scoops and wraps by all the boys. The precision with which the boys did their subbing, showed great transitioning skills. They really were a well-oiled machine! It was a very hot day and the boys were exhausted, but dug deep to continue to impress the selectors.
After the semi finals, the ‘possible and probables’ were chosen to play. The boys chosen for this game were Joshua Woutersz, Riley Jones, Sandon Smith, Kai Renshaw, John Saley, Alex Halls, Tom Sawyer and Kale Livesley. At the conclusion of the game, Joshua Woutersz, Riley Jones, Sandon Smith, Kai Renshaw, John Saley, Alex Halls and Tom Sawyer were chosen as members of the Broken Bay Squad. It was very impressive and humbling, as the coach, to have 7 of the 14 man squad chosen from the ‘Eddies’ team.
At the conclusion of the day, a tired team played St Augustine’s, Brookvale in the grand final, winning 5-2. Sandon Smith had some impressive assists and Kai Renshaw was solid in defense. Riley Jones, although totally spent, still managed to score 2 tries.
This was the third time members of this team has been gold medalists! In total, the team scored 33 tries and only allowed 5 tries to be scored against us!
Overall, these young men were excellent ambassadors for the College, showing great sportsmanship and excellent manners to the opposition, the referees and staff from other participating schools. It has once again, been a great pleasure being involved with the team!
