Year 11 Street Retreat
The Year 11 Street Retreat exposed our students to the harsh reality of life on the street for Sydney’s homeless.
Many aspects of this lifestyle are unfamiliar to our students, and they clearly learned a great deal during their three days in Sydney. The experience included visits to Hyde Park Barracks, The Wayside Chapel, the Jewish Holocaust Museum, Baptist Care, Australian Catholic Mission, St Canice's Catholic Church, Oasis (The Salvation Army), St Mary’s Cathedral, and several outreach centres for the homeless, including the surrounding areas of the iconic Kings Cross district.
Students also observed and received explanations of the Needle Exchange Program and the Matthew Talbot Hostel. They witnessed both wealth and poverty on the streets of Darlinghurst. Representatives from Youth Off The Streets and L’Arche also spoke with students about the vital work their organisations do in supporting vulnerable communities.
It is the hope of the St Edward’s community that the lessons learned during these few days will remain in the students’ hearts and minds, inspiring a lifelong commitment to compassion and outreach.

Academic Assembly Semester 1
We congratulate all students who received awards at the Semester 1 Academic Assembly yesterday Wednesday 30 July. The format for our Awards categories, aligns with our College Values and Code for Learning.
Our award categories are designed to reflect our College Aspiration Statement, which encourages students to embody respect, autonomy, and resilience. These traits are essential for personal growth and lifelong learning, and we believe that recognising them through our awards program reinforces their importance.
The Learner Profile, a key component of our academic environment, has been integrated into our classroom practices and is pivotal in helping students understand our expectations for their learning journey. The Profile, together with the College Values, guides students in developing contemporary learning dispositions necessary for success both in and out of the classroom.
We are immensely proud of all our students and their achievements. Their dedication and hard work reflect the values we cherish and strive to instill in every learner. Congratulations once again to all our award recipients.

Bullying No Way – National Week of Action
Bullying – important conversations to have with your child.
St Edward's is proud to participate in the Bullying No Way: National week of action – 11 to 15 August 2025.
By working collaboratively within our community, we can collectively help reduce bullying.
Families play an important role in helping children understand bullying and know how to respond to it.
If your child tells you about things at school, or you observe something in public that involves conflict or bullying, take the opportunity to talk about what bullying is. You can learn more about what defines bullying at bullyingnoway.gov.au.
Questions you could ask:
What do you think bullying is?
Have you seen it? How did you feel?
Have you ever felt scared at school because of bullying?
As well as me, who are the other adults you would talk to when it comes to things like bullying?
Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?
Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?
Remind your child that bullying is never okay and discuss how they can respond safely if they experience or witness it.
Encourage them to seek help from a trusted adult and keep seeking support if needed.
By promoting open communication, we empower children to stand up against bullying and create a safer environment where everyone can feel that they belong.
For more information visit bullyingnoway.gov.au.

A Semester of Discovery in French
Exploring Francophone Cultures: A semester of discovery in French
Last semester, our Year 8 French students embarked on an exciting journey through the Francophone world. With a strong focus on linking language to culture, students were encouraged not just to learn French vocabulary and grammar, but to dive deeper into the richness of the French-speaking world and its diverse communities.
Students began researching French-speaking countries around the globe. From Canada to Senegal, Belgium to Vietnam, students explored the geography, traditions, and cultural practices of each nation. This research not only expanded their understanding of the global French-speaking community but also sparked curiosity about how language evolves and connects people across continents.
Then, our linguists brought the focus closer to home with a project on la famille (the family). Each student created their own family tree, using French to describe relationships and ages, and to introduce family members by name. Building on this, students practised speaking and writing about the hobbies and interests of their relatives — a creative and personal way to reinforce vocabulary for leisure activities and sentence structures around likes and preferences.
Linking to current events and French traditions, students then turned their attention to one of France’s most celebrated sporting events — the Tour de France. Each student chose a professional cyclist to profile, learning about their background, achievements, and team affiliations. They created informative and visually engaging posters that not only showcased their athlete’s career but also integrated key French phrases and vocabulary related to sports and biographies.
These varied tasks have all been part of a broader goal: to help students see the French language as a living, breathing part of real-world culture, not just a subject in the classroom. By learning about people, sports, food, and families… through French, students are developing a deeper appreciation of how language reflects identity and culture.
Looking ahead, Year 8 students will be turning their attention to French cuisine. Their next project will involve making a French dish — researching regional dishes, understanding cultural mealtime traditions, and using authentic French language to name and describe meals. It promises to be a delicious end to the term!
In other year levels, language learning continues with purpose. Year 10 students are revisiting core grammar and vocabulary to strengthen their foundational skills. Through focused revision and practical communication tasks, they are preparing to step confidently into more advanced topics this term.
Meanwhile, Year 12 French students are developing their fluency as they approach the HSC. Their lessons are now centered on more sophisticated expression, comprehension, and language analysis. Whether writing essays or participating in discussions, they are applying their language skills in increasingly complex and authentic contexts.
Across all levels, the emphasis remains clear: learning French is not just about memorising words — it is about understanding people, exploring new perspectives, and engaging with a culture that has shaped art, cuisine, philosophy, and global conversation for centuries. Bon travail à tous nos élèves — keep up the great work!

Mock Trial Round 3
On Tuesday 24 June, St Edward’s College participated in Round 3 of the Law Society of NSW Mock Trial Competition, taking on Henry Kendall High School in a criminal law matter.
This round centred on a case of larceny under Section 117 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW). The matter was heard in the context of the Local Court of NSW, where the defendant, Casey Doyle, stood accused of stealing $2,000 in cash — allegedly taken from the Metro Banking Corporation.
Henry Kendall High School took on the role of the Prosecution, bearing the responsibility of proving each element of larceny beyond reasonable doubt, including:
That the accused took and carried away property
That it belonged to another
Without the owner's consent and
With the intention to permanently and fraudulently deprive the rightful owner
St Edward’s College represented the Defence and was not required to prove the defendant’s innocence. Instead, our task was to challenge the Prosecution’s case, particularly by raising reasonable doubt about the accused’s intention and knowledge at the time of the incident — both crucial elements in a larceny charge.
St Edward’s presented persuasive legal arguments and handled the courtroom environment with confidence and professionalism. Despite a strong showing, the magistrate ruled in favour of Henry Kendall High School, awarding them the case and the overall trial.
While St Edward’s did not win this round, the team demonstrated a sound understanding of the legal principles and displayed excellent advocacy and teamwork under pressure. Their ability to question witnesses, manage legal objections and present logical argumentation highlighted their growing courtroom skills.
A special mention goes to Max Armour, Angus Stewart and Johnny Lin, who took on the demanding roles of witness, barrister and courtroom officer despite not studying Legal Studies. They were exceptionally composed, well-prepared, and quick-thinking under pressure, making valuable contributions to the Defence team’s performance. Their willingness to step up and their ability to engage with complex legal material was impressive.
We were once again fortunate to receive expert guidance from solicitor Mr Nick Fagan of Tonkin Drysdale Partners. His support in fine-tuning the team’s arguments and assisting the boys in developing clear, confident courtroom communication was invaluable. Mr Fagan’s practical advice helped the students strengthen their case structure, anticipate objections and think on their feet. His involvement not only enhanced their legal understanding but also boosted their confidence and composure under pressure.
We would also like to acknowledge Ms Katie Moon for her invaluable support throughout the day. Ms Moon played a key part in keeping the team grounded, well-prepared and composed before the trial began. Her calm presence and encouragement helped ensure everything ran smoothly, allowing the students to focus entirely on their roles in the courtroom.
We were also glad to have some Year 10 Commerce students join us as audience members. They showed great focus and respect during the trial and had the chance to see legal concepts in action. Some were so interested that they even came back to watch again—a great sign of how engaging and worthwhile the experience was.
Although we didn’t secure a win this time, the journey has been incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. The competition has now ended for us, with only the top 32 schools progressing to Round 4. We are proud of the team’s commitment, progress and determination throughout each round. We are confident some future solicitors are emerging from this team!
