What does economics really look like as a career?

It’s not just crunching numbers or studying supply and demand – economics is about solving real-world problems, understanding human behaviour and shaping decisions that impact everything from interest rates to climate change policy.

In latest edition of Careers with STEM: Economicswe bust myths about economics, explore where it can take you (hint: it’s not just banking), and meet real economists working at the heart of Australia’s economy – including at the Reserve Bank of Australia.

You’ll discover how economics connects with data, story-telling, policy, agriculture and more – and why it’s a powerful way to combine STEM skills with purpose-driven work.

Whether you’re a student thinking about subject choices, or a teacher looking to spark classroom conversations, this issue will open up new ways of thinking about economics – and where it can take you.
