Celebrating Special People
Year 7 – Celebrating the Special People in Our Lives
On Friday, 8 May, our Year 7 students came together with many of their family members to honour and celebrate the special people who have played a significant role in their lives. The gathering was a heartfelt tribute to those who have nurtured, supported, and guided them on their journey of growth and development.
Each core class shared a thoughtful presentation, beautifully expressing the gratitude and admiration the students hold for the influential figures in their lives. These meaningful contributions reflected not only creativity but also the deep appreciation the boys have for the love and care they receive.
The celebration was followed by a delightful morning tea, offering a warm and welcoming opportunity for families to connect and reflect on the occasion.
Sincere thanks to all who contributed to the planning and preparation of this special event, and to the Year 7 boys who presented with such confidence and sincerity. Your efforts made the morning truly memorable.

Year 12 Retreat
Year 12 Retreats at Winbourne, Mulgoa
The 2025 retreats will be remembered for the great enthusiasm and wholehearted involvement of all students who attended. Year 12 were given the opportunity to take part in meaningful spiritual experiences during their three-day retreat in the peaceful and serene surroundings of the Mulgoa Retreat Centre – and they didn’t waste it.
A big thank you to the staff from our College for their dedication to the Retreat program. Many played a key role in guiding the boys through times of reflection, prayer, bushwalks, and discussions on topics such as Relationships and Consent, What it Means to be a Man in the 21st Century, Goal Setting, The Importance of Communication, and planning for the future. The celebration liturgy, organised by the students, was especially moving, marking the final retreat for this cohort. Parents and staff should feel incredibly proud of the maturity and contribution shown by Year 12.
Our guest speakers – Mrs Connor, Mrs Evans, Mrs Palmer-Brown and Mrs Beagin – were exceptional. Their talks were insightful, thought-provoking and well received by the students, leaving them with plenty to reflect on.
I am confident these meaningful experiences will have a lasting impact, helping prepare our boys for what lies ahead. I’ve no doubt many will look back on these days as a significant and memorable part of their journey. I thank and congratulate all of Year 12 for their outstanding participation.
The staff at Mulgoa were glowing in their praise of these fine young men from St Edward’s. They spoke highly of the boys’ positive attitude, friendliness, cooperation, courtesy, and willingness to fully embrace the retreat experience. One comment that stood out was, “I can’t get over how well-rounded they are – probably because they’ve been exposed to a range of social justice experiences.” This group is a credit to their families and the College.
A special thank you to Mr Powell, our Year 12 Pastoral Leader, and Mrs Palmer-Brown, Leader of Learning Religious Education, for all the incredible work they did during these important days of review and reflection.

TAS and iSTEM
iSTEM is an innovative, interdisciplinary elective subject offered in Stage 5 of the NSW curriculum that integrates the core areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Designed to foster problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking, iSTEM provides students with hands-on learning experiences that mirror real-world applications. The course aligns with the NSW Department of Education’s focus on future-focused learning, supporting students in developing skills essential for emerging industries and careers in STEM fields.
STEM thinkers all think about problems in different ways:
Scientist – want to prove or disprove ideas so they know WHY things are like they are.
Technologist – want to solve problems by using ideas and tools
Engineer – make sure that ideas and solutions work.
Mathematician – want to think about HOW things are like they are

Geography Stage 6 Fieldwork Trip
On Wednesday 30 April, the Year 11 and 12 Geography students of St Edward's College and St Joseph's travelled by coach up to Coffs Harbour to investigate the Gondwana subtropical rainforest at Dorrigo National Park. Part of the study was also stopping in at the rural town of Bellingen.
The fieldtrip went for three days and on the Thursday, students arrived at Dorrigo rainforest and were guided by two wonderful National Parks Rangers through the various layers of the rainforest and informed of the deep time history of the ecosystem they were exploring. This included an appreciation for the First Nations peoples care of country and the work of the NSW Rural Fire Service in protecting the rainforest against its biggest threat, fire.
Students maintained high vigilance against leeches and expressed wonder at how the rainforest has been able to adapt and thrive over the course of several millennia, including its resilience to climate change and most recently the logging industry and fire. Year 12 boys and girls in particular will be further researching Dorrigo National Park in preparation for their HSC - where they will need to write extensively about the unique characteristics of the subtropical rainforest and this immersive fieldtrip will surely help their essays shine.
The accommodation at Coffs Harbour also offered plenty of down time, where students played basketball, cricket and range of team building activities run by the wonderful staff. A big appreciation goes out to the wonderful Geography teachers at St Joeseph's who organised the event.

Creative Inspiration Takes Center Stage with Matthew Lin’s Visit
Students in Years 7–10 were treated to an exciting and inspiring session when illustrator and graphic designer Matthew Lin visited.
With his wealth of experience in the creative industry, he captivated students with a presentation on his artistic journey, sharing insights into his work and design process.
The highlight of the visit was the interactive drawing session, where students had the chance to put their creativity to the test by designing their own characters. Laughter and enthusiasm filled the room as they experimented with different styles and techniques, guided by Matthew's expertise. Even the teachers couldn’t resist joining in, turning the session into a friendly competition of artistic skills.
Matthew Lin’s visit left a lasting impression on students and staff alike, proving that creativity knows no bounds. Whether seasoned artists or first-time illustrators, everyone walked away with a renewed appreciation for the magic of visual storytelling.
What a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn from a true professional! Who should we invite next?

Mock Trial Round 2
On Monday 19 May St Edward’s College competed in Round 2 of the Mock Trial Competition, facing Wyong Christian Community School in a civil case.
Our team represented Emily Carter, who brought a negligence claim against Westfield Shopping Centre Pty Ltd following a slip-and-fall incident. St Edward’s College appeared for the Plaintiff while Wyong Christian Community School acted for the Defence.
In preparation for the trial, the boys dedicated significant time to understanding the key legal principles relevant to the case—namely Duty of Care, Breach, Causation, Damages, Contributory Negligence, Foreseeability and the Burden of Proof. Anticipating the strategies Wyong Christian might employ, they carefully analysed potential areas for cross-examination, compiled a list of likely objections the Defence might raise and formulated well-reasoned responses.
The team also worked to predict the identity and likely roles of the Defence witnesses. In response, they crafted targeted questions for both chief and cross-examinations. Throughout the process, the boys ensured their preparations were aligned with the provided script, making certain that every argument, line of questioning and legal principle was coherent and well-integrated.
On the day, the team performed with confidence and professionalism. Cooper Harker and Dominic Dodd delivered persuasive and articulate performances as barristers, while Max Armour and Byron Hubble remained composed and credible under cross-examination as witnesses. Harry Barnett showed great attention to detail with his well-organised and professional solicitor’s notes and Jeremy Huybrechs-Chung performed the role of Magistrate’s Clerk with precision and efficiency, ensuring that both the Plaintiff and Defence teams remained on schedule throughout the proceedings.
Although St Edward’s College did not secure the case verdict, the team won the overall Trial for Round 2, demonstrating exceptional skill, teamwork, and preparation throughout the competition. Their performance highlighted their understanding of courtroom etiquette and protocols, as well as their strong work ethic and confidence.
Every team member stepped out of their comfort zone, challenging themselves and developing valuable skills in the process. They showed resilience under pressure, met tight deadlines and adapted effectively to last-minute team changes—demonstrating teamwork, maturity and perseverance throughout.
A special mention goes to Max Armour and Byron Hubble, who took on the demanding role of witnesses despite not studying Legal Studies. Both students were required to memorise detailed witness statements and embody their characters convincingly under rigorous questioning. Max, in particular, deserves extra recognition for stepping in just three days before the trial to replace a witness—an enormous task that he approached with determination and delivered on exceptionally well.
We were once again fortunate to receive expert guidance from solicitor Mr Nick Fagan of Tonkin Drysdale Partners. His advice on questioning techniques and courtroom strategy was instrumental in helping the team refine their approach and strengthen their overall performance. His mentorship offered students a deeper insight into critical thinking, courtroom dynamics and the importance of preparation under pressure.
We were also pleased to welcome Ms Michaela MacGilles to the coaching team for Round 2. Before becoming a teacher, Ms MacGillies worked for many years as a paralegal. Her legal background brought a fresh and practical perspective to the boys’ preparation. She supported the team with advice on courtroom etiquette, clarity in legal argument and how to interpret and respond to the details within witness statements. Her involvement added an extra layer of depth to the students’ learning experience.
Thank you also to Ms Katie Moon. Although her bus-driving skills weren’t needed for this round, her behind-the-scenes support was just as crucial. She helped keep the boys focused, organised and calm in the lead-up to the trial. Her presence contributed to the smooth running of the day and allowed the team to concentrate fully on delivering their best in the courtroom.
We also extended an invitation to the Year 10 Commerce students to attend the trial and observe their peers in action. They showed excellent focus and patience, sitting through the proceedings—an impressive effort that offered them valuable insight into the real-world application of legal principles.
Round 2 is wrapped up. Stay tuned—Round 3 is just around the corner!

Rugby League Dominance
St Edward’s Rugby League Teams Dominate at Gumbayah Oval
On Wednesday, 7 May, the St Edward’s College Under 14's and Open's Rugby League teams delivered an outstanding performance at Gumbayah Oval, Doyalson, securing a clean sweep in their respective competitions — the Cochrane Cup (Under 14) and the City Cup (Opens).
Both teams remained undefeated throughout the day, showcasing exceptional skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Their dominance on the field was evident in every match, as they outplayed their opponents with a combination of disciplined defence and powerful attacking play.
Open's
With limited preparation due to exams, work placement and wet ovals the team did a tremendous job gelling across their three games. A simple game plan and encouragement to ‘play what was in front of them’ saw our team post three comfortable wins.
We played St Peter’s Catholic College in our first game, and it didn’t take long for St Edward's to gain ascendancy, winning comfortably 28-0. We then played Green Point Christian College who seem to be able to get under our skin, however, we again ran out winners 22-4. Our final game was against MacKillop Catholic College, who started strongly but soon gave up the fight as we ran away with the game 36-3.
Strong runs through the middle with Toa, Brooklyn and Brendan laying a powerful platform. From there our speed men took advantage with tries to Cooper, Logan, Kye, Owen, Ryan and Flynn. Nixon, Jaxon, Luca and Ryder were crafty in the middle and led our defence. Will and Caleb controlled our attack and field position, as Noah, Blake and Lachlan challenged the edges. A fantastic team performance.
Team: Owen Bell, Noah Best-Minto, Flynn Carson, Benjamin Geddes-Brown, Cooper Jones, Ryder Kasun, Nixon Lavin, Jaxon Macintosh, Will McClelland, Kye McIntosh, Luca Norris, Lisitoa Paea, Lachlan Park, Caleb Peterson, Brendan Ratay, Brooklyn Roberts, Ryan Smith, Blake Teasdale, Logan Treble, Kyan Werner
Under 14's
The Under 14 team’s efforts in the Cochrane Cup were particularly impressive, with strong communication and consistent pressure allowing them to control the pace of each game. Meanwhile, the Open's team proved their experience and depth in the City Cup, executing strategic plays and maintaining composure under pressure.
The day began with a commanding performance against St Brigid’s Catholic College. From the opening whistle, the St Edward’s side dominated both in defence and attack. Their aggressive running and disciplined defensive structure saw them keep a clean sheet, running in 4 unanswered tries to claim a convincing first-round victory.
In the second match, the boys faced their toughest challenge of the day against a physically imposing St Peter’s Catholic College. However, the St Edward’s side rose to the occasion with an exceptional defensive effort, holding firm against repeated attacking sets. Their determination paid off with a 3-try-to-0 win, once again keeping their opposition scoreless.
The final match of the day was against MacKillop Catholic College. Full of confidence and momentum, the team played with flair and control, dominating all areas of the field. The boys cruised to victory, comfortably sealing the final match and finishing the day undefeated.
Standout performers on the day included:
Beau McKeon, who, despite being the smallest on the field, was fearless in defence, throwing himself into every tackle and showing incredible heart.
Alex Winner, whose powerful runs consistently broke the line and carried defenders with him, setting the platform for attacking plays.
Sean Mahoney, who was St Edwards Player of the Day, was electric with ball in hand, breaking the line almost every time he touched the ball and scoring multiple tries across the three matches.
Team: Fraser Boake, Finn Close, Lincoln Craig, Ashton Hubbard, Saint Levae, Harry Lowbridge, Sean Mahoney, Beau McKeon, Riley Nebauer, Jacob Piper, Ambrose Plunkett, Max Portass, Tyler Preston, Rocco Roycroft, Tobi Ruhl, Nicholas Smith, Kody Teasdale, Alexander Winner
Thanks to their convincing victories, both teams have now qualified for their respective finals, which will take place later in Term 2. This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the commitment of the players and coaches involved.
Congratulations to all the boys who took part — your hard work, determination, and school spirit have made the St Edward’s community proud. We wish both teams the best of luck in the finals!

High Schools Surfing Challenge
Mutual Bank High Schools Surfing Teams Challenge
On Thursday 8 and Friday 9 May, our Surfing Team travelled to Bar Beach, Newcastle to compete in the Surfest Teams Challenge.
Challenging surf conditions and a mix of weather certainly influenced the wave quality of heats, and it became a lottery for the waves.
Teams consisted of 3 surfers. In a 20-minute heat, each surfer was scored on their best wave from a maximum of two waves they were allowed to catch. They then had to raise their arm for the next surfer in the team to paddle out. The last surfer had to be on shore at a designated area before the heat ended. Teams received bonus points for this.
Teams and Results
Team A: Cohen Tower, Ollie Goulding and Jack Humphries placed first and fourth in the rounds.
Team B: Euan Symth, Liam Thompson and Rhys Morrisby placed third and second in the rounds.
Team C: Tom Barry, Max English and Finlay Jones placed third and first in the rounds.
Team D: Billy Carpenter, Liam Boland and Oscar Uglow placed third and first in the rounds.
With 66 teams in the Boy’s Division and only four teams qualifying for the Final, heat scores and the luck of the quality waves saw our boys fall short of the final. However, they are to be commended on their behaviour throughout the challenging two days.
A big thank you to both Mr English and Mr Austin who assisted with the team.

Year 7 Rice Cup
Year 7 Rice Cup Gala Day
On Wednesday, 14 May our Year 7 Football team travelled to the Valentine Sports Complex to compete in the second annual Rice Cup, a highly anticipated soccer gala day featuring teams from EREA schools across New South Wales. With a mix of determination, skill, and school spirit, our boys competed in three tightly contested pool matches, earning their way into a well-deserved semi-final.
Match 1 vs Waverley College
Our opening match of the day was against a competitive Waverley College side. The game was evenly matched with both teams enjoying periods of possession. Despite some nervy moments—particularly with Waverley being caught offside on multiple threatening occasions—we held firm. Our goalkeeper, Jackson Potter, was solid between the posts, making crucial saves to keep the scores level. The breakthrough came following a corner, where Johann Wainmayer reacted quickly to finish off a loose ball and give us a narrow 1-0 win. A gritty and fortunate start, but a win nonetheless.
Match 2 vs Edmund Rice College
Our second fixture was against a technically strong Edmund Rice College team. We spent much of the game under pressure, with our opposition controlling the majority of possession and testing us with several long-range efforts. Once again, Jackson Potter stood tall, keeping us in the game with multiple sharp saves. The match ended 0-0 with the boys showing resilience and an impressive scramble in defence.
Match 3 vs St Edmund’s College
By our third match, the boys were beginning to find their rhythm. We dominated the early stages of play, winning several corners and showing great energy across the pitch. The team battled hard, winning crucial one-on-one challenges and holding strong in defence. Despite a goalless first half, the boys’ persistence paid off in the second. Will Vidler led the charge, scoring two well-taken goals from runs through the middle, and Zac Auld followed up a penalty rebound to seal a convincing 3-0 win. It was a true team performance, marked by excellent ball movement and growing confidence.
Semi-Final vs Christian Brothers Lewisham
Our efforts in the pool matches earned us a place in the semi-final against a tough Christian Brothers Lewisham team. We started brightly, with Will Vidler once again showcasing his individual brilliance to break through the midfield and slot home the opener. A close-range chance from Matthew Johnston soon after nearly extended the lead, but a fine save from the opposition keeper kept them in the game. The score was locked at 1-1 at halftime. In the second half, Lewisham lifted their intensity and took control, converting two strong chances to finish the match 3-1 in their favour. Though disappointed, the boys left the field proud of their efforts against one of the best teams of the day.
Throughout the competition, the team displayed great sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience. Special mentions go to Jackson Potter for his consistent presence in goal, Angus Haines for his strong role building up play through midfield, Matthew Johnston for his excellent ‘false nine’ work up front and to Will Vidler for his leadership as captain on the day and attacking impact. The boys can hold their heads high, having competed with heart and skill in a challenging and exciting tournament.
We are proud of their efforts and look forward to more opportunities to see them represent the school on the pitch.

Grit and Grace from the Intermediate Football Team
On Tuesday 13 May, the St Edward’s Intermediate Football Team travelled to Croma to participate in a Gala Day competition against fellow Catholic schools from across our diocese.
On Tuesday 13 May, the St Edward’s Intermediate Football Team travelled to Croma to participate in a Gala Day competition against fellow Catholic schools from across our diocese. Despite the wet weather forcing a change in format to a single knock-out tournament, our team rose to the challenge with determination and team spirit.
In a tightly contested match against St Leo’s Catholic College, both teams displayed strong defensive efforts, resulting in a 0-0 scoreline at halftime. Early in the second half, St Leo’s managed to break the deadlock with a fortunate strike that ricocheted off the post and rolled into the net.
Undeterred, our boys continued to press forward. Their persistence paid off when Archie Lowe was brought down in the penalty area, earning a spot kick. Beau Louie stepped up with confidence and delivered a superbly taken penalty to level the score.
With no goals scored during extra time, the match proceeded to a tense penalty shootout. Despite a valiant effort, St Edward’s narrowly missed out, with St Leo’s emerging as the victors.
Although the result didn’t go our way, the team demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and resilience. They held their heads high and graciously congratulated their opponents on a well-fought contest. The day was a testament to the spirit and character of our players, who represented St Edward’s with pride.

· How to start your application is a simple video on how to create your account to apply.
· How to apply for uni through UAC for Year 12 students is a step-by-step guide for students as they complete their UAC application.
Educational Access Scheme
Each year, the UAC team encourages the use of EAS for students who have experienced significant challenges in Year 11 and/or Year 12, which have affected their studies and grades.
University admissions equity schemes are a vital part of ensuring fair access to higher education and are designed to remove barriers that prevent capable students from reaching their full potential.
UAC helps facilitate EAS applications for 21 participating institutions. Read more about how equity schemes level the playing field in our recent news story.
Schools Recommendation Scheme
While we have been out and about, we have demonstrated to students how simple the SRS application is. With just a click of a button, SRS is the easiest and simplest early offer application a student can complete.
Although not all universities or courses are available for early offers, we would recommend all Year 12 students submit an SRS application to widen their opportunities without all the additional fuss of personal statements or extracurricular activities. It just takes a few seconds.

Early Leave Passes
To uphold the College’s duty of care, strict procedures are in place for students who need to leave during the school day.
Appointments During School Hours:
The College encourages parents to schedule appointments outside school hours whenever possible. However, if your child must leave during the day, the following process must be followed:
Provide your child with a written note addressed to their Pastoral Leader, outlining the reason for leaving early.
Your child must present this note to Student Reception in the morning to receive an Early Leave Pass.
2. Collection of Students:
At the time specified in the Early Leave Pass, the student must sign out at Student Reception. Parents or guardians must collect the student from Student Reception directly.
For safety reasons, students in Years 7-11 are not permitted to leave school grounds unaccompanied or to catch public transport during school hours.
3. Year 12 Students:
Year 12 students who drive to school are required to follow the Early Leave Pass procedure and must sign out at Student Reception before leaving the College grounds.
Students with flexible timetables must still sign in and out at Student Reception but are not required to provide a parental note for their movements outside scheduled classes.
The College encourages parents not to make appointments to see doctors etc during school hours, but we understand that this is not always avoidable. If a student is required to leave school throughout the day, we ask parents to write a note addressed to the Pastoral Leader outlining the reasons for leaving early. The student presents this to their Pastoral Leader in the morning and they will be issued with an Early Leavers Pass. The student is required to bring the Early Leavers Pass to student reception at the time he needs to sign out and we ask that parents make arrangements to collect their son from student reception. We have a duty of care to all students and no student in Years 7-11 will be permitted to leave the school grounds to catch a public bus at any time throughout the day. Year 12 students who drive to school are required to follow the same arrangements regarding the Early Leavers Pass to attend an appointment and sign out at reception prior to leaving the College grounds. Year 12 students who have a flexible timetable, still need to sign in and out at student reception but do not need a note from their parents.
