The Social Media Delay for Under 16’s – How to Support our Kids

St Edward’s is committed to supporting our families with the ways our boys access social media.  There are some government-mandated changes coming.

In less than four months, Australia will introduce world-first legislation banning under 16s from using major social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X, Reddit, and YouTube. From December 10, these platforms must delete existing underage accounts and prevent new ones using age verification software, with no parental consent option available.

While the ban aims to protect young people from online harms, experts note it may also impact social connection and identity development. Parents are encouraged to prepare their children early by:

1. Starting conversations now about the reasons for the ban and its effects.

2. Gradually reducing screen time to ease the transition.

3. Replacing social media with real-world activities that foster belonging and creativity.

4. Encouraging offline friendships and community engagement.

5. Modelling healthy screen habits themselves.

The change will challenge families but will also present an opportunity to rebalance young people’s digital and offline lives.
