The Power of Physical Activity
The Power of Physical Activity for Young Australians

A recent University study in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust has highlighted the powerful impact physical activity has on the overall well-being of young people. The research found that many students are spending excessive time on screens—over four hours a day for 43% of them—which is contributing to feelings of loneliness and lower levels of happiness. However, schools that actively promote physical education, sport, and movement throughout the day are seeing significant improvements in students’ physical, emotional, and social health. Regular physical activity not only boosts mood and reduces loneliness but also helps young people build stronger social connections and develop healthier habits.

Importantly, the study emphasised the need for inclusive practices, especially for students with diverse educational needs and disabilities, ensuring that all young people have access to meaningful and enjoyable physical activity. The researchers called for schools to embed physical activity into their culture, reduce sedentary behavior, and create environments that encourage movement and play. By doing so, schools can play a vital role in supporting the mental health and development of their students.
