Screen Time or Scream Time
Screen time or Scream time? Helping our boys limit their technology use at home.

As we move back into school routines, it can be challenging to help our kids establish healthy limits on technology use. While there is no easy fix, there are a few steps parents and carers can take to help this process be successful.

Research indicates that involving children in setting screen limits makes it more likely they will cooperate. A plan could include setting time limits for particular websites or games and storing devices out of reach overnight.

Fun visual aids, such as charts, can also help boys starting high school understand and follow the rules.

It’s also important for children to understand what the consequences will be for not sticking to limits and that there is consistency in enforcing this. As our kids get older, introducing more responsibilities around the home, things that must be completed before any screen time, can be a helpful incentive.

This week we celebrate Safer Internet Day. It is a good time to connect, protect and reflect as we work to set parameters on healthy screen time.

Connect: Take time to chat with your son about his online interests.

Protect: Check with them that they know the importance of cyber security and social media settings, updated passwords and increasing online dangers.

Reflect: Encourage them to explore with you the positives and negatives of online activity and set expectations and boundaries together for the family to adhere to.
