Founder’s Day Mass
The Founders Day Mass was once again a significant and special occasion for the St Edward’s College community, providing a meaningful opportunity to come together in faith and reflection.
Presided over by Father Vince, the ceremony was a reverent and prayerful celebration of the College’s history, values, and mission. Students participated with admirable respect and reverence, embodying the spirit of the occasion through their thoughtful presence and quiet reflection.
A special congratulations goes to the talented musicians—both staff and students—who contributed to the atmosphere of the Mass with their beautiful performances. Their music, carefully prepared under the guidance of Mrs Rankin and Mr Toole, added depth and a sense of spiritual richness to the ceremony.
Events such as Founders Day remind us of the strength, unity, and shared purpose within the St Edward’s community.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to this meaningful and memorable celebration.
As part of the day’s proceedings, long-serving staff members were also recognised and honoured. Certificates were presented to those who have dedicated 10, 15, 20, 25, and even 30 years of service to the College. Their ongoing commitment and contribution to the life of St Edward’s is deeply appreciated and truly inspiring.

Bravery Beyond the Classroom
One of our Year 7 students, Ace Garrett, demonstrated remarkable courage and composure during a life-threatening emergency while surfing at Avoca Beach a few weekends ago.
While in the water, Ace heard a man calling for help. Acting swiftly, he paddled over with his friend Sunny (who is not a student at St Edward's) to assist. They found a man floating on his back, frantically flailing his arms and struggling to stay afloat. He was unable to feel his legs and clearly in distress.
Ace quickly removed both his and the man’s leg ropes, handed the surfboards to Sunny, and began swimming the man toward shore. He supported the man’s legs to help him stay buoyant and prevent him from going under. It was a courageous and physically demanding effort that ultimately brought the man to safety.
Once on shore, two young women who had witnessed the situation came to assist. Together with Ace and Sunny, they gently carried the man further up the beach, keeping him as still as possible, and called for an ambulance.
The man—Steve—turned out to be a paramedic himself. Despite his training, he was full of praise for Ace and Sunny’s calmness, surf skills, and quick thinking. Steve admitted he was not a confident swimmer and hadn’t surfed in years. He was overwhelmed with gratitude and said, without hesitation, that Ace had saved his life.
Last Sunday, Steve met with Ace to thank him in person. He gifted Ace a $150 surf shop voucher and shared that he had undergone emergency surgery to fuse his neck at the C3/C4 level—an injury that could have left him permanently paralysed. Thanks to the quick and selfless actions of Ace and Sunny, Steve is not only alive but walking again.
We are incredibly proud of Ace for his outstanding bravery, humility, and compassion. His actions—and those of Sunny—represent the very best of what we hope to inspire in our students and broader community.

Reconciliation Week
Last week, our College proudly observed National Reconciliation Week with a series of meaningful events and learning opportunities that deepened our understanding and commitment to reconciliation.
We began the week with a whole-school assembly, where students and staff reflected on this year’s theme and explored key concepts such as truth-telling, justice, and the importance of acknowledging the past to build a more inclusive future.
Throughout the week, stand-alone Religion lessons allowed students to engage in stage-appropriate learning around Reconciliation. These sessions focused on understanding Australia’s history from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and identifying ways we can contribute to a more inclusive and respectful community.
A highlight of the week was our students' participation in the Central Coast Reconciliation Week March, walking from Coast Shelter to Industree Group Stadium. We were especially proud of the small group of students who formed part of the official Guard of Honour, welcoming marchers into the stadium with the powerful sounds of the Yidaki (Didgeridoo) and clapsticks.
Reconciliation is more than a week—it is a journey. Thank you to all staff and students who contributed to the spirit of reflection, learning, and unity across our College community.

It’s a chance to put faith into action and respond to real human need in our local area.

Performing Arts Showcase
We are delighted to celebrate the success of the inaugural Central Coast Catholic High Schools Performing Arts Showcase, held at St Edward’s College Theatre on the evenings 20 and 21 May.
Conceived as a variety concert, the Performing Arts Showcase aimed to highlight the excellence in performance across our Central Coast Catholic High Schools. The program featured vocalists, ensembles, drama, and instrumental performances from students representing St Brigid’s Catholic College, St Edward’s College, St Joseph’s Catholic College, MacKillop Catholic College, and St Peter’s Catholic College. Each school nominated four polished performance items, creating a diverse program that included Drama, Music, and Musical Theatre. The performances ranged from exquisite solo and small ensemble pieces covering Classical to Contemporary Rock and Pop, as well as large vocal and drama ensembles.
This event provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase the incredible work being nurtured in our Secondary Catholic Schools and the immense talent of our students. It allowed them to shine in front of their peers and the wider community.
Both evenings were incredibly well attended, and the performances were spectacular. It was a fantastic opportunity for students and teachers to collaborate, fostering a real sense of community among our performers and schools.
A heartfelt thank you goes to our Performing Arts faculty for their dedication and effort in making this event a polished and seamless experience for both performers and the audience. Additionally, the Vet Entertainment students played an integral role, completing valuable work placement hours on a live production, including lighting, vision, follow spot operation, and working side of stage.
Congratulations to all our performers and our wonderful MC’s! We look forward to building on this event in the coming years.

Visual Arts Enrichment Program
On Thursday 22 May, we welcomed enthusiastic Year 4 and 5 students, nominated by their Catholic primary schools, for our Visual Arts Enrichment Program.
Under the guidance of Ms Sarah Evans, Ms Tina Danckert, and incredible support from Year 10 and 11 students from St Edward’s College and St Joseph’s College, the day was filled with creativity, colour, and hands-on fun!
Students explored Copic marker drawing, scratch art, and created their own visual art diaries – all sparking a deeper love for the arts.
A huge thank you to everyone who brought this day to life. You've inspired the next generation of artists!

Shining a Light Through Storytelling: Doco in a Day
Last Tuesday, a group of passionate students from our College took part in Doco in a Day, a national initiative run by Edmund Rice Foundation Australia. This unique experience challenged students to create a compelling short documentary—within a single school day—on the theme Equal Access to Education.
Working in small teams, our students researched global education inequality, explored real-world stories, and brought these to life using pre-supplied footage, images, and voiceovers. The result? Powerful three-minute documentaries that raise awareness about the barriers many children and communities face when trying to access education.
The day was not only a creative and collaborative challenge but also a social justice initiative. Each team is now using their finished documentary to support their ongoing fundraising efforts for the Edmund Rice Foundation. Every dollar raised goes directly toward increasing access to education in communities around the world—empowering individuals, families, and entire communities.
We’re proud of our students’ creativity, compassion, and advocacy, and look forward to seeing the impact of their storytelling and fundraising efforts.

TBA’s Stud Start Program Applications Now Open
Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) has opened applications for its successful Stud Start program. It serves as an entry point for individuals with little or no prior experience to enter the breeding industry.
Fully funded by TBA, Stud Start was launched in 2023 to complement our flagship training program, Fast Track. The program is designed for individuals, particularly those in rural areas, who are seeking a career change, re-entering the workforce, or pursuing a career in thoroughbred breeding.
Successful applicants will embark on a six-week introductory program that combines online learning with an intensive week-long learning experience in Scone, NSW.
During the week in Scone, participants will engage in class-based education and gain hands-on experience with horses, allowing them to apply the knowledge they acquired from the online lessons completed in the previous five weeks. Other activities will include farm visits, guest speakers, and networking opportunities.
By the end of the six-week course, participants will have completed three units of competency, which can contribute to the Certificate III in Horse Breeding, should you decide to pursue this qualification.
The goal is to equip participants with the fundamental skills, knowledge, and connections necessary to take the first steps toward joining Australia's thriving breeding industry. Approximately 70% of graduates have secured roles within the thoroughbred industry that align with their lifestyles post the program.
Applications for the program are now open and can be accessed via this link, these will close on Friday, June 13th. Successful applicants will start online learning from Monday, June 30th, which continues through to Monday, July 28th.
After the online learning component, students will participate in an intensive course in Scone from Wednesday, July 24th, to Wednesday, August 6th. Accommodation will be provided during the week in Scone, and financial assistance may also be available depending on participants' travel requirements.
If you have questions about the Stud Start program or other TBA education initiatives, please don't hesitate to contact me at madison@tbaus.com or 0405 535 436.
