Waterford Service-Learning Program
As we approach the end of Term 2, it is amazing to see the way students are engaging in the Waterford Service-Learning Program, giving back to the community and making a difference both in large and small ways.
A reminder that each student in Years 8 to 11 is required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of service by the end of Term 3. Currently within Religion classes, students are reflecting on their experiences, documenting their learnings, and planning how they will complete their remaining hours.
The Waterford Service-Learning Program is designed to instil a sense of responsibility and compassion in our students. By participating in various community service activities, they learn the importance of giving back to the community and develop essential life skills such as empathy, teamwork, and leadership. This program not only benefits those in need but also enriches the lives of our students, preparing them to be conscientious and active members of society.
Exciting upcoming opportunities for service hours include:
The second College Sleepout in Week 2 Term 3
Founder's Day next term will offer various chances to earn hours, with more information to be announced soon.
Students can also participate in the Push-up Challenge which is currently running
The 40 Hour Famine will run again next term, more information to come.
Another fantastic opportunity is volunteering for the BBQ Fundraiser, which will run from Weeks 2 to 7 next term. Details on how to get involved will be released in the coming weeks.
We encourage all students to take advantage of these opportunities and to explore their own to fulfill their service requirements and make a positive impact on our community.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the parents for their unwavering support of the Waterford Service-Learning Program. Your encouragement and involvement are crucial to the success of our students as they embark on these meaningful projects. Together, we are fostering a generation of young individuals who are not only academically accomplished but also socially responsible and compassionate.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to witnessing the positive changes our students will bring to the community through their dedicated efforts.

Year 7 Elephant Ed Incursion
It was exciting to host a joint venture with St Joseph’s College last Wednesday, 12 June, combining the Year 7 cohorts of both schools and led in part by both prefect leadership teams.
The event was entitled ‘Respectful Relationships’ and aimed to build positive and respectful connections between our schools and their student bodies. Highlights included the fun and engaging icebreaker games run by the prefects, the shared morning tea provided by both schools and the small group sessions on respectful relationships run by Elephant Ed, leaders in adolescent wellbeing and personal development programs.
Feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive as they received a shared message about what respectful, kind and inclusive relationships look like in our contemporary context. It is our hope that collaborative endeavours between our two schools can grow from here as we seek to foster right relationships between all our students. A special thank you to both Year 12 Prefect teams and the wonderful staff from St Joseph's College for their efforts that made the event such a success.

The Latest News from the Food Technology Faculty
Semester 1 has once again been a busy and productive time for the Food Technology and Hospitality classes.
The boys have continued to embrace the practical side of Food Technology and Hospitality, preparing and presenting some amazing dishes. The Year 9 and 10 students are gaining confidence in their skills and are beginning to add their own flair to their food presentations.
The Year 12 Hospitality students have been working hard to complete their mandatory competencies for their Cert II in Cookery. They continue to excel in the preparation and presentation of a wide variety of dishes using different methods of cookery. They completed the practical assessment of their “Prepare and Serve Espresso” unit at the Central Coast Community College, Ourimbah. The boys demonstrated skills in coffee grinding, tamping, and preparing various coffees such as macchiatos, cappuccinos, and lattes.
The Year 12 Food Technology classes had the opportunity to visit East Coast Beverages and Grace Springs Farm as part of their HSC studies. This excursion allowed the boys to experience firsthand the concepts they have studied this year, including the operations of the Australian food industry, food manufacturing, and food product development. We were fortunate to observe the processing and packaging of various juices. It was also a fantastic opportunity to view the paddock-to-plate and snout-to-tail eating concepts locally, as well as seeing a farmer, Virginia, who is committed to the ethical treatment of her livestock.
[smallgallery fooid="53942"]
Year 11 Food Technology participated in a workshop with Sharyn from Cake & Plate. The boys decorated cupcakes with a “Sporting” theme and learned how to use buttercream and mould and work with fondant. Sharyn demonstrated how to produce the five compulsory styles, and the boys were then able to create their own using the techniques they had learned. A fun and imaginative day was had by all! The students have been studying the “Food Quality” unit, photographing their dishes, and then evaluating their presentation techniques afterwards. Their recent assessment task saw them prepare a big breakfast and then examine the functional properties of the dishes they prepared.
Year 11 Hospitality had their first of two work placements. The employers were impressed with their skills in the kitchen and ability to work in a team within a commercial establishment. Some students were again offered part-time jobs due to their confidence and competence in the kitchen. The boys are beginning to familiarise themselves with the French culinary terms and the precision cuts that are an integral part of the Hospitality - Cookery course.
[smallgallery fooid="53968"]
Year 10 students are continuing to develop their time management and presentation skills. These will be utilized next term when they complete the Food for Special Occasions unit and have to design and prepare a celebration cake using various food presentation techniques.
I was impressed with the enthusiasm and motivation that the Year 9 students demonstrated in their recent Crazy Shakes task. Some wonderful designs were created, and the boys had fun bringing their ideas to life.
[smallgallery fooid="54013"]
We were also fortunate enough to host a High Tea for staff during Well-being Week. The staff made the famous Food Technology scones, as well as enjoying some homemade sausage rolls and rocky road.
[smallgallery fooid="54037"]
As this goes to publication, three senior Hospitality students are busy practicing for the Broken Bay Battle of the Chefs competition, which will take place on Thursday, 27 June at St Peter’s College. The boys have been busy practicing their dessert – a chocolate tart with a salted caramel sauce. The main course will be a mystery box, and the boys will need to research their ingredients and prepare this for judging. We wish them all the best for this competition.

Year 9 Commerce Excursion
As part of the Commerce curriculum, Year 9 students explored the topic of Running a Business. To gain firsthand insight into business operations, advertising and sales strategies, an excursion to Erina Fair Shopping Centre was organised.
In this unit, students examined how entrepreneurial attributes and dispositions contribute to business success and the considerations involved in planning and running a business. The boys investigated key issues and processes related to various aspects of business operations. For their assessment task, students developed a business plan, and the excursion provided an opportunity to observe the success and strategies of various businesses at Erina Fair.
The excursion offered students two key experiences. First, they observed businesses in action within Erina Fair Shopping Centre, which houses various types of businesses that sell and promote a wide range of products and services, fostering competition. Students took notes on consumer behaviour, store layout, location, and advertising methods while exploring the centre.
As part of our practical learning experience, each student received a $5 loan from the College to purchase an item with the objective of reselling it for a profit. This will take place during Term 3 Founder’s Day celebrations. Students must identify their target market, understand their wants and needs, and determine whether the product will still be in demand three months from now. The profit generated from these sales will be used to buy underwear for women living in the slums of Kenya. At the end of Term 3, Mr Bonnici and some of our Year 11 students will personally deliver these items to the Mission making a direct and meaningful impact on these women’s lives.
Thank you to the Year 9 students for representing the College so well during their time at Erina Fair. Thank you to Miss Hillard and Ms Celebrin for organising the event. Thank you to Mr Millar for accompanying both classes and sharing his extensive legal, business, and retail knowledge with the boys. Lastly, a special thank you to Mr Speziale for taking time out of his schedule to drive the bus and transport the boys to and from Erina. Your contributions made this an enriching experience for everyone involved.

Love Bites Program
Thursday 13 June saw the Love Bites team from NAPCAN visit the Year 7 cohort with 13 presenters facilitating activities throughout the day.
These presenters deal with real life issues every day as many are social workers and others work in various agencies such as Coast Shelter. The Love Bites team led the boys through activities around respectful relationships including the use of social media, resisting stereotypes, bullying and being an upstander, seeking help and supporting a friend.
The PDHPE team and College Counsellors also sat in on the sessions to support the students and will follow up this day’s content and practical applications throughout their PDHPE lessons.

Open’s Basketball
The St Edward’s College opens basketball squad recently won the NSW All Schools Open's Basketball Division 1 tournament held 11 June at Maitland Federation Centre.
The boys won all pool games in double digits, playing outstanding defense with smooth ball movement that opened up high-percentage looks on offense. St Edward’s reached the final and soundly defeated St Columba Anglican 47-28. Both teams will advance to the state finals in Penrith.
Eddie’s big men dominated throughout the tournament, with Brooklyn Roberts, Tom Roth and Neo Thompson supplying the bulk of the team’s scoring and rebounding. Outstanding senior leadership was provided by Flynn McHale and Liam Hore, who added timely scoring and defensive stops. Stellar guard play and assists were contributed by starters Cruz McMahon and Max James. The bench support, which was significant throughout the tournament, came from Harvey Olsen, Kaine Hieber, Oscar McMahon, and Austin Romain.

Opens Rugby League
After our win in the Broken Bay City Cup at Erina Oval on Wednesday 22 May, the team progressed to the Central Coast Grand Final. This was held in wet conditions at Morry Breen Oval on Thursday 13 June.
This game was certainly a step up in class and we prepared with this in mind. Our team of young guns against the more experienced Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College.
As expected, the Tuggerah Lakes Secondary team came out firing early and jumped to a quick 6-0 lead after finding space from some handy offloads. Tuggerah Lakes certainly piled on the chatter, and it took our young team a little while to find their feet. To their credit, they hung in there and we slowly started to get back into the game. Some tough runs from Nate Valamis, Billy Sands, Luther Thomas (who was exceptional on the day) and the work horse Ryder Kasun saw us start to win the field position battle. From there, Josh Brown and Will McClelland kicked and created plenty of opportunities for our team to show their many talents.
Just before half time the momentum started to swing. The team came out from the half time break full of confidence and we scored soon after to level the scores. The game was end-to-end, but we seemed to be winning the battle. With under 10 minutes to go, a momentum shift saw Tuggerah Lakes take full advantage and score two slick tries in quick succession. Nevertheless, the boys did not give up and fought right to the end going down 18-6.
It was a fantastic performance across the board and certainly a learning experience for our young team. Credit to Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College on the win.
The Team
Cooper Jones, Brayden O’Leary, Jay Clarke, Byron Marks, Logan Treble, Josh Brown, Will McClelland, Nate Valamis, Ben Geddes-Brown, Luther Thomas, Noah Best-Minto, Billy Sands, Ryder Kasun, Ben Hoban, Caleb Petersen, Lincoln Markulin, and Archie Hall.

Under 15's Rugby League Team Battles Bravely in the Rugby League City Cup
On 29 May, our Under 15s Rugby League team showcased determination and skill in the Rugby League City Cup. The day began with a challenging game against Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College, ending in a hard-fought draw. Despite a few setbacks, our players demonstrated resilience and teamwork.
In the second game against Green Point Christian College, we struggled with turnovers and penalties, yet managed to secure a win, reflecting the team's ability to overcome adversity. The final game against Northlakes High School was a highlight, with our team delivering a resounding victory, proving their prowess on the field.
Although undefeated throughout the day, the team narrowly missed progressing further, falling short by just 4 points due to the for-and-against point difference. Despite this, the players displayed immense talent and determination, demonstrating the Eddies spirit on and off the field. We look forward to building on this experience and coming back stronger in future competitions.

Careers – Transition Expo for Student with Disability
The Future Choices Transition Expo is the only one of its kind in the greater region of Newcastle and the Central Coast.
Whilst there are other disability expos, there are none that focus in on the move from school to further education, training and employment. Transitioning from school to the next stage of your life when you are living with disability often comes with unique challenges and sometimes unexpected opportunities. The Hunter and Central Coast Future Choices Expos attract over 120 exhibitors with a focus on connecting young people living with disability to employment services, employers, education providers, disability providers and government services to help them make informed decisions about their future and the support available in the move to adult life.
Presented by Career Links, the events are also run in conjunction with the National Disability Coordination Officer Program and the NSW Department of Education Support Teachers. Operating since the year 2000, the event is a critical information resource and important date on the calendar for school leavers and their parents or carers who face the day-to-day challenges of living with a disability and are seeking to explore opportunities and pathways open to them.
“Each year the event attracts approximately 1,500 students,” said Career Links CEO, John Purcell. “Some attend with a school group, others come with their parents or their carers. It’s open to tertiary graduates as well and is free to attend.”
The events attract exhibitors from a range of organisations including:
*Disability Service Providers
*Universities
*TAFE Colleges
*Registered Training Providers
*Group Training Companies
*Youth Support Services
*Career Services
*Employers
*Employment Services
*Supported Employment
*Apprenticeship Centres
*Government Agencies/Services
*Advocacy/Peer Support Groups

Central Coast Council’s Immersion Day
Kynan Johnston and Tristan Jackson attended Central Coast Council’s (CCC) Immersion on Thursday 6 June to learn about their apprenticeship and traineeship programs to be advertised on 14 June. Central Coast Council is an employer of choice as they provide their apprentices and trainees with expert mentoring and professional development as well time to attend study, tools of the trade and flexible work and rostered days off.
The day began with a site induction and a session on how to apply for jobs at CCC, which included helpful tips. They then attended the mechanics workshop, the fitters and electrical workshop, and the Somersby Water Treatment Plant. I was very impressed with the young apprentices who spoke about their experiences and responsibilities with such enthusiasm, and how much they enjoyed the company of the people they work with. They talked about contributing to a bigger picture, clearly understanding their role in it, and seemed genuinely proud of their contribution.
This was such a worthwhile immersion for our two students, and I encourage more students to read their emails and to take advantage of such opportunities as these can be life changing.
If your son is interested in working with Central Coast Council, please email buildyourcareer@centralcoast.nsw.gov.au for advice on your pathway options.
Apprenticeships on offer on 14 June are:

Water Treatment Traineeship
Heavy or Plant Mechanic Apprenticeship
