NAIDOC Week Celebrations
Week 1 of this Term we celebrated NAIDOC Week, a significant event in our school calendar where we honour the histories, cultures, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year's theme, Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud, and Proud, resonated throughout our celebrations, encouraging us to embrace and express our shared cultural identity with pride and confidence.
Reflecting on the Theme
The theme Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud, and Proud inspired us to celebrate the vibrant and enduring cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It emphasised the importance of maintaining our cultural heritage, expressing our identities boldly, and standing proud in our traditions and stories.
Activities
Dedicated Religion Lesson: Our religion classes focused on the importance of NAIDOC Week. We delved into the theme Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud, and Proud, discussing how we can actively preserve and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural identities and how these cultures are ones that all Australians can be proud of. This lesson provided students with a deeper understanding of the significance of NAIDOC Week and the powerful message behind this year's theme. Some students created their own posters to represent this year’s theme:
Didgeridoo (Yidaki) Workshop: The Year 10 Music class, along with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, participated in a Didgeridoo (Yidaki) workshop. This workshop was an enriching experience, allowing the students and staff to learn about the cultural significance of the Yidaki and gain hands-on experience in playing this traditional instrument. It was a wonderful way to connect with the musical traditions of Aboriginal culture and express this cultural heritage through music.
School Mural Project: One of the highlights of our NAIDOC Week celebrations was the painting of our second school mural. Building on the animals featured in our first mural, this new artwork expands the visibility of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture within our school. The mural not only beautifies our school environment but also serves as a constant reminder of the rich cultural heritage we are privileged to be part of. It stands as a testament to our commitment to keeping the fire burning, loud and proud.
Conclusion
Our NAIDOC Week celebrations were a tremendous success, offering us valuable opportunities to learn, reflect, and celebrate the rich cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Let us continue to honour and respect the cultural heritage of this land, keeping the fire burning bright, loud, and proud in our everyday lives.

College Sleepout
College Sleepout: A Night of Empathy and Awareness
Last week, our College hosted its second "College Sleepout" for 2024. The Sleepout is an event where students have the unique opportunity to spend a night sleeping rough in the College Quad. This event is designed to help students build empathy and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by rough sleepers in our community. While we can never truly know what it is like to live without the security of a home, the experience provided a powerful glimpse into the realities of homelessness.
We were honoured to have Peter Downie and Jarrah Wallace from Coast Shelter join us for the evening. They provided a compelling overview of the homelessness crisis on the Central Coast and explained the vital work being done by Coast Shelter to support those in need. Their insights were eye-opening, and we extend an immense thank you to them for their time, dedication, and the crucial role they play in our community.
In addition to the experience, students also made a meaningful contribution by donating $10 each, which will go directly to Coast Shelter to aid them in their mission to help those who are most vulnerable.
This event not only raised awareness but also fostered a spirit of compassion and solidarity among our students. We are proud of their willingness to participate and support such a worthy cause.

Surfers ‘Make a Wave’ for SurfAid
In the month of September the surfers - students, staff and families of St Edward's are invited to join the St Edward's Surfers Make a Wave group to raise vital funds and awareness for the incredible work that SurfAid does across remote regions of the surfing world.
The premise is simple; surf everyday during the month of September, track how many surfs you have and raise money for SurfAid. In the 2023 Make a Wave month, $645,000 was raised globally. This is the second year that our Eddie’s community is participating in “Make A Wave”, last year we raised over $10,000 and hope that we will be able to do the same again this year.
All boys who participate in this great initiative will be able to gain Waterford Hours for the surfs that they have. In addition, SurfAid have donated 3 URBN Surf Melbourne Vouchers for the top three fundraisers at St Edward’s.
If you'd like to get involved, please click on the link, and sign up. If you have any questions, please contact Jackson English (jenglish@stedwards.nsw.edu.au)

Curriculum
What’s Been Happening in the HSIE Faculty
At the start of Term 3, all History and Geography students in Years 7-10 began their new semester rotation, with all junior students being issued their first assessment task of the term.
These tasks all share a common theme that they are project based and celebrate student choice. They include:
Year 7: Selecting an Ancient Greek source and creating a multi-modal analysis
Year 8: Students studying the Vikings have a "challenge by choice" task, allowing each learner to select an activity style that aligns with their learning goals and academic aspirations.
Year 9: Are investigating a food of their choice grown or produced in Australia and determining its sustainability into the future
Year 10: Are creating a Google Earth Project that digitalises a student geographic fieldwork investigation in their local natural environment.
Please take the opportunity to engage with and discuss these exciting tasks with your son.
Year 9 Commerce
In other news, the industrious Year 9 Commerce students are excitedly preparing for Founder’s Day with their "From Five Bucks to Big Bucks."
During last term's excursion to Erina Fair, each student was given $5 to make a purchase. Now, they are putting their entrepreneurial skills to the test, turning those small investments into profitable products to sell on the day.
Students are getting creative by brainstorming ways to turn simple items, like a packet of lollies, into innovative products that can generate profit for Founder’s Day. They have discovered that by joining forces and combining their resources, they can create more appealing and marketable products.
A wide variety of products will be available for purchase on Founder’s Day and in the days leading up to the event. Students and teachers can choose from jelly cups, spider drinks, mixed lollies, raffles, guessing competitions, and many other exciting options. Keep an eye out for the promotional activities to come. Everyone is encouraged to bring cash and arrive early on the day to snag the best deals and support the students’ efforts. All proceeds will go towards purchasing women’s underwear for the Women for Women Organisation in Kenya, which Mr Bonnici and five Year 11 students will personally deliver during their trip to Kenya at the end of Term 3.
History Elective Assessment Success
This year, our Year 10 students in the History Elective have been engaged in a series of dynamic assessment tasks designed not only to deepen their historical knowledge and analytical skills but also to cultivate essential 21st-century skills that are transferable across subjects and into life beyond school.
The first task required students to research a specific aspect of the life of Ramses the Great and create an online virtual museum exhibit to showcase their findings. To prepare, students had the privilege of visiting the Gold of the Pharaohs exhibit at the Australian Museum in Sydney, gaining firsthand inspiration for their projects.
Click Here to View Student Work by Harry Barnett, Augustus Brady and Jeremy Huybrechs-Chung
The second task explored the theme of Civil Wars, where students selected a civil war from any historical period and produced a 2-3 minute podcast. In their podcasts, they outlined the main events, significant figures, and outcomes of their chosen conflict, honing their research and communication skills.

This term, students will step into the shoes of archaeologists for a day as they participate in an archaeological dig on Oval 3. They are fortunate to have guest archaeologist Tracey Howie speak to them about archaeology and ancient Aboriginal Australia, adding a layer of real-world experience to their studies.
Australian History Competition
Earlier this year, a group of our students took part in the Australian History Challenge, a prestigious competition that tests students' abilities to analyse historical sources through a challenging multiple-choice quiz. Our students performed exceptionally well, achieving a range of impressive scores. Notably, two students earned distinctions, and Harry Barnett achieved a high distinction. These results reflect the dedication and hard work of our students in mastering historical analysis.
Year 11 Geography
The Year 11 Geography students on the first day back of Term 3, jumped on the College bus and headed up north to the Awabakal Environmental Education Centre in Dudley to complete a fieldwork investigation of different vegetation zones in the area. This included examining the conditions of micro- climates and a walk to a stunning headland. The students also learned how to use a range of data collection tools and connect them to the importance of land management.
[foogallery id="54696"]
History Extension Major Works
Our Year 12 History Extension students have been deeply immersed in their major projects for almost a year, exploring various elements within their chosen areas of historiography. Their dedication and perseverance will culminate in a final essay that contributes significantly to their assessment for the course. Later this term, these students will have the opportunity to showcase their research and findings at the Major Work Showcase night, where they can take pride in their rigorous academic efforts.
The HSIE Department is incredibly proud of all our students' achievements and the skills they are developing through their historical studies. We look forward to continuing to support their educational journeys and celebrating their successes.

Junior Basketball CSBB Gala Day
The 2024 junior boys' basketball team won the Catholic Schools Broken Bay title at Breakers Indoor Sports Stadium in Terrigal on 5 August.
In a round-robin tournament, the St Edward’s College squad defeated teams from MacKillop Catholic College, St Leo’s Catholic College, St Paul’s Catholic College, St Brigid’s Catholic College and St Peter’s Catholic College. In the final game, the boys built a sizeable lead against undefeated Mater Maria Catholic College and held on to win by a score of 35-27. Throughout the tournament, St Edward’s boys averaged 39 points a game, allowing only 16 points per game against.
With the win at the CSBB tournament, the St Edward’s junior basketball squad will next compete in the NSWCCC finals at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre in Term 4.
Josh Marsters, Mason Potestas and Rasmus Borg led the team with their scoring. Lucas O’Beirne, Jesse Ball and Hoi Tin Ho played great defense and were tasked with keeping the opposition in check. Cooper Armstrong, Max Miller, and Steven Keating dominated the defensive boards. Sebastian Picone, Keyan Lamabelawa, James Blow and Sean Burnett provided bench scoring and showed great all-around hustle each game.
Special thanks to Mr Carpenter for his support and supervision on the day.

Under 13’s Rugby League CSBB Gala Day
This year the Under 13’s St Edward’s Rugby League team competed in the Catholic School’s Broken Bay (CSBB) Gala Day.
Before a ball was kicked, we had a few students withdraw due to injury, which meant some students got their first opportunity to represent the school. We were placed in a pool with St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly; St Peter’s Catholic College, Tuggerah; and Mater Maria College, Warriewood. We needed to win every game to qualify for the grand final.
We defeated St Paul’s 36 to 12, followed by another win against St Peter’s 24-6, which meant we needed a win against Mater Maria to guarantee a grand final berth. We managed to defeat Mater Maria 42 to 6. This meant we played St Brigid’s Catholic College, Lake Munmorah in the grand final.
After a long day of gala day footy, fatigue had set in. To the boys' credit, they gave 100% in the final and ran away winners 24-6. I would like to thank Mr Woodbine and Mr Gentle for coaching the team, and all the parents who came to support throughout the day. Some special mentions are:
Austin Willis (Captain) scored 6 tries on the day and lead from the front all day.
Makai Parada scored 5 tries on the day and is only in the Under 12s age group
Cruz Vella 2 try hero in the grand final
I could give a special mention to all the boys as it was a real team effort.
Congratulations and let’s bring on next year.

Under 16’s Rugby Union – Steve Merrick Cup
On Wednesday 7 August, the Under 16’s Rugby Union squad travelled to Maitland Rugby Park to play in the fourth round of the Steve Merrick Cup.
The College was lucky to be invited to this competition, which takes in 16 schools from the Newcastle, Hunter and Country regions of NSW. The competition is broken into two tiers, with each tier consisting of eight teams, Tier 1 being the schools with regular rugby players and Tier 2 are those schools with a developing rugby program.
Last Wednesday, the boys played two games against Tier 1 schools, being Hunter Valley Grammar School and Hunter Sports High. Both games were very physical, played at high speed, and demonstrated sportsmanship of the highest level. While the boys were competitive in both games, they were unfortunate to go down in both matches, 22-0 to Hunter Valley Grammar and 12-7 against Hunter Sports High.
After the matches, the boys voted on players' player, with Toa Paea and Luka Coghlan-Berg being named by their peers as being outstanding in both matches and setting a positive tone.
Congratulations to all players on the sportsmanship shown, the camaraderie and the continued development as a team.
