A timely reminder that students are required to wear full winter uniform from the first day of Term 2 until the conclusion of Term 3.
Midford, our uniform suppliers have winter uniforms in stock at the warehouse, and they are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm, closed on the Easter (17 and 21 April) and ANZAC day (25 April) public holidays. Alternatively, uniforms can be ordered online.
St Edward's College also has a Second Hand Uniform Group on Facebook that allows parents to buy and sell College second hand uniforms. The official name is St Edward’s College Second Hand Uniforms Group, East Gosford.

The College uniform is designed to present a positive image of the College to the wider community. The uniform should foster a sense of belonging and pride and the way it is worn in public, displays a level of support and respect for the College. The responsibility of wearing the uniform properly does not end at the College gates and it is important that the St Edward’s College uniform is worn correctly to and from school.

All Things Science
[caption id="attachment_59993" align="alignright" width="218"] Kyle James[/caption]
This year, Science has welcomed College “Old Boy” Kyle James to the teaching ranks. He has been a great addition to the faculty, bringing both a passion for science, a wide range of teaching experience and a deep understanding of charism of Edmund Rice and what it means to be an “Eddies” boy.
Year 7 have been busy developing their skills in observing and measuring, using the data collected to make qualified judgements and quantifiable conclusions. These skills have been put to the test in the first assessment task “Finding the Ideal Lunch Spot”. Students have had to take multiple measurements of distances between access to facilities within the College that are important at lunch (oval, canteen, bathroom and how far they have to carry their bag), light exposure, temperature, wind speed and direction, available seating and type etc. It has been exciting to witness the boys communicating and working collaboratively to carry out this task and demonstrate newly developed skills.
Year 8 have been learning about “Cells and Body Systems”. From developing microscopy skills to learning about the structure and function of the circulatory and pulmonary systems, differentiating between breathing and respiration, the role of the digestive system and how the excretory system removes harmful cellular waste from the body. As assessment for this topic, the boys had to create a model of a chosen system and make a video not only explaining the function of the parts, but why they chose the materials they used to represent each component.
For the first half of Term 1, Year 9 have studied the “History of the Atom”, looking at how our comprehension of matter has changed from the time period of critical philosophical thinking of Aristotle through to the period of Scientific Enlightenment, where emphasis was placed on scientific observation, verification and following the scientific method. During the second half of the term, “A Local Ecosystem” was covered, with the boys demonstrating their critical skills in researching and evaluating first and second hand data to investigate one of the many varied ecosystems found on the Central Coast.
During Semester 1, Year 10 study short courses on Biology (genetics), Chemistry (Chemical reactions) and Physics (motion) so they have a taste of what will be studied in the Stage 6 courses. The boys sit tests on each topic of work and a half yearly examination covering all the work studied, to give them quantitative feedback on their achievement in the course, as well as their own “feel” on the courses and whether they’d like to continue to study them to the HSC.
Year 11 have begun their study of the Stage 6 Preliminary program and have completed their first assessment tasks. This should give them guidance on how the quality and quantity of home based learning they are doing adds to the work covered in class. The boys are strongly encouraged to regularly revise their coursework and come to class prepared with questions on any areas that they may not fully comprehend. The teachers of the senior courses are always open and strongly encourage the boys to seek and act upon feedback throughout the study of these courses.
Year 12 are at the half-way point of their HSC journey. The second assessment tasks have just been completed during the Midcourse Examination block. With 6 months remaining, there is plenty of time to reflect on the level of achievement in these exams, gain feedback, improve examination technique and focus on those areas identified that require extra attention.

Mock Trial – Round 1
The Mock Trial Competition, supported by the Law Society of NSW, offers students across NSW a hands-on introduction to the judicial system. Through realistic courtroom simulations, students gain practical experience in legal proceedings within an adversarial setting.
Our Legal Studies students recently participated in their first round of the 2025 competition, taking on the role of the defence in a criminal case. While they did not secure a win in the case itself or the overall Mock Trial, they demonstrated strong legal reasoning, effective teamwork and persuasive argumentation throughout the competition.
Beyond the competition, the program fosters key academic and professional skills, including listening, speaking, writing, reading and critical analysis. Participants step into the roles of legal professionals, adhering to court protocols and dedicating significant time to case preparation. Ultimately, the competition promotes a deeper understanding of law, justice and good citizenship.
Each trial is overseen by a Magistrate—an experienced solicitor—who evaluates teams on various criteria such as their Opening Address, Closing Submissions, recall of witness scripts, cross-examinations and courtroom etiquette. The team with the highest overall score is declared the winner of the trial.
Round 1 saw St Edward’s College and Central Coast Grammar compete in a criminal case. As the defence, our team was tasked with representing a 24-year-old man accused of using an SMS service to send threatening and harassing messages to his ex-girlfriend.
Our team defended our client with a well-structured case, presenting strong legal arguments, thorough cross-examinations and compelling evidence. Through careful analysis and persuasive advocacy, we challenged the prosecution’s claims and upheld our client’s presumption of innocence.
We were fortunate to receive guidance from solicitor Mr Nick Fagan from Tonkin Drysdale Partners, over two sessions. He offered invaluable advice on effective questioning techniques and courtroom strategy. This enabled the team to refine their approach to examinations and strengthen their case.
This round provided a valuable learning experience, allowing our students to develop their legal reasoning, teamwork and public speaking skills. As we prepare for the next stage of the competition, we look forward to refining our strategies and continuing to grow as aspiring legal professionals.
Congratulations to the entire Legal class who assisted in the preparations. A special thank you and congratulations to our legal team on the day for their outstanding participation and immersion in this program:
1st Barrister: Lachlan O’Brien
2nd Barrister: Dominic Dodd
Solicitor: Harry Barnett
1st Witness: Cooper Harker
2nd Witness: Sam Duffy
Court Officer: Jeremy Huybrechs-Chung
A special shoutout to Ms Katie Moon for her impressive, almost ninja-like skills in manoeuvring a bus that was completely boxed in. If there was an Olympic event for precision reversing, she would take home the gold! Also, a big thank you for her support throughout Round 1.
Well done to all involved—we look forward to the next Round ahead!

Year 11 Metal and Engineering Excursion
Crossmuller Excursion
On Friday 4 April, students from Year 11 Metal and Engineering class embarked on an industry visit to Crossmuller, a local engineering company that fabricates engineering systems for their parent company Borg Manufacturing. The boys were amazed by the size and scale of the engineering and the opportunities available in the Metal and Engineering sector. Many thanks to Jason Fretwell and the Crossmuller team for their continued support of our boys.

Twenty-Two Year Tradition Continues
Under 14 and Under 15 Annual Rugby League Game vs Blacktown Patrician Brothers
On 4 April, our two teams took on the mighty Patrician Brothers’ Blacktown in our Annual Rugby League fixture. The first of these friendly games took place 22 years ago and has since become a cherished tradition between the two Colleges—a true highlight of the College calendar and a testament to the strong camaraderie we share.
There was a fantastic atmosphere throughout both games, especially when the crowd erupted with cheers and encouragement. Facing last year’s State Champions is no easy task, but our boys rose to the challenge with determination and pride.
Both matches began strongly for St Edward’s, with powerful charges from the forwards and some slick, well-coordinated play from the backs. This early momentum gave our boys plenty of confidence, and they went on to win the first game. In the second match, our Under 15s started with great spirit and effort. However, as the game progressed, Blacktown’s depth and experience began to shine through, allowing them to dominate both in field position and on the scoreboard.
Despite the outcome, both games were fiercely contested, with tough tackling, structured attack, and impressive skill on display. The commitment, sportsmanship, and spirit shown by all players made for an entertaining and memorable afternoon of rugby league.
At the conclusion of the games, one standout player from each team was recognised for their exceptional performance.

UAC News
Did you know that UAC provides resources and support for parents and carers? Visit our website for access to resources on a range of topics, from selecting HSC subjects in Year 10 and deciding whether to drop a course in Year 11, to ATARs, accepting an offer to a tertiary course and more.
Parents of Year 12 students are encouraged to subscribe to UAC’s digital newsletter for parents, for the latest information, deadlines and advice to support their child on their journey to university.
Applications are open
UAC applications for study at uni in 2026 are now open for domestic students. International students can apply from 16 April.
Details of hundreds of semester 1, 2026 courses offered by UAC’s participating institutions are available on our website. More will be added over the next few months. Students who apply now should log back in to their application in August to take another look at the courses being offered and review their course preferences.
Starting an application: essential info
This year, students need the following details to start their UAC application:
Personal email address: For security reasons, when students start their application they will need to register with a personal email address and a password. They'll then be sent an email to validate their details. Once they've done that, they will use their email address and password to log in to their application.
Year 12 student number and UAC PIN: We emailed UAC PINs to NSW and ACT students today using the email addresses NESA and ACT BSSS have on file. If any students didn't receive this email, please ask them to call UAC on (+61 2) 9752 0200. Also remind NSW students to register a personal email address in their NESA Students Online account.
Students need to enter their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN early in the application. These details identify them as a 2025 Year 12 student, which means they'll be able to apply for an early offer through the Schools Recommendation Scheme.
Unique Student Identifier (USI): At the request of institutions, this is now a mandatory field for domestic applicants who are Australian citizens. Students can quickly and easily create their USI or check if they already have one.

THE ADERG DIRECTORY HAS A NEW LOOK
'GRADUATE SHOWCASES - FIND-A-COURSE - COURSE INFO LINKS
In line with our recently announced plans to discontinue the ADERG Directory in its current format, its replacement is the new online combo WHERE TO STUDY index of all universities and colleges offering Creative Arts.
The updated index incorporates links to the landing page of all of the listed Australian universities and colleges as well as:
• GRADUATE SHOWCASES for selected institutions. Inspirational images of graduate work.
• FIND-A-COURSE. links to institution websites for course information for every Graduate Showcase.
• GRADUATE SHOWCASE social media links. Follow the postings of your choice.
WHY THE CHANGE?
Put simply, the universities and colleges have worked hard to compile the most comprehensive course details, making course selection easy. We aggregate the possibilities and, as in the past, put it all in one place. You don't need to hunt around.
