What’s Been Happening in Food Technology
13.09.21
Greetings from the Food Technology Department. This year has flown with many exciting adventures for the boys, prior to lockdown.

Year 12 Hospitality students completed their Prepare and Serve Coffee Course at Blend Co, Lisarow. Year 11 Hospitality had a successful workplace at various venues across the Coast. There was also success for our Hospitality students at the Battle of the Chef’s competition in Term 2 at St Peter’s Catholic College. Although the boys were not finalists, they were great ambassadors for the College, giving up many afternoons to perfect their cooking skills. They prepared a delicious main course of Poached Chicken in Tarragon Sauce with Duchess Potatoes and Dutch Carrots, for dessert they prepared Profiteroles with Chantilly Cream and Strawberry Coulis. Their ability to work as a team and complete tasks within a set time frame was impressive.

Once again, we have been fortunate enough to be able to visit East Coast Beverages with Year 12 Food Technology. This was part of our study into The Australian Food Industry and Food Manufacturing. We toured their facilities and had informative speeches about their development of new products and the processes they go through, as well as quality assurance and control protocols. We are grateful for their continued support of the Food Technology Faculty.

Year 11 Food Technology also enjoyed a visit from Cake ‘N Plate as part of the Food Quality unit. The boys decorated cupcakes with buttercream and fondant with a ‘fast food’ theme. It was exciting to see the boys engaged and enjoying their creativity with these mediums.

Term three has had its challenges with teaching a practical subject online. The boys have all shown their commitment to this and have embraced our cooking at home challenges. I am sure that families have enjoyed watching their sons cook throughout the term and are hoping that they will continue this practice throughout the coming weeks. I would like to commend all students on their efforts and application during Home Based Learning and the staff look forward to seeing the boys in person and watching their skills in the kitchen develop.

Although these are trying times, the Year 11 and Year 12 students have completed their exams online during this term. Their efforts and resilience are to be applauded!

Finally, I would like to wish both the Year 12 Food Technology and the Year 12 Hospitality students all the best in their upcoming HSC examinations… “I know you’ll make it through and reach your dreams. Just believe in yourselves”
