Wednesday 31 October was a cracker of a day. Conditions were very favourable with a clean 2 ft swell, clear skies and barely a breath of wind.

The decision was easy. The Broken Bay Surf Comp was on!

It wasn’t long before The Surfing NSW Judges arrived with the tents and all the other equipment needed to run the contest. After a quick briefing from the judges and lifeguards, Mr Herringe called for the Heat 1 competitors to check in and at 7:45 am, like clockwork, the event was underway.

St Edward’s were represented by Harry Carpenter and Zac Paterson contesting the Open Boys Surfboard. Joel Vaughan and Joel Barry competed in the Junior Boys Surfboard, Hugh O’Malley walked the plank in the Malibu division with Darcy Maley and Noah Farrelly taking on the Junior Bodyboard event.

Congratulations to all of our surfers. They surfed competitively enjoying the conditions as they progressed through the rounds. Some notable achievements on the day were, Darcy Maley coming 3rd in the Junior Bodyboard and Harry Carpenter taking out the Open Surfboard trophy. The standout surfer at the event was Joel Vaughan who posted a 10 in the Semi Final and another 10 in the Final.

Congratulations to St Peter’s Catholic College who won Champion School Girls and St Paul’s College who were Champion School Boys.

The event wouldn’t run if not for the efforts of a dedicated crew of St Edward’s staff. Thank you Mr Tony Herringe, Mr Jackson English, Ms Tina Dankert and Mr Michael Lord for your efforts.

Finally I would like to acknowledge Mr Tony Herringe, Mr Chris Kokegei and Mr Damian Coase (from St Peter’s Catholic College) for their ongoing commitment to school surfing over the 20 years of the Broken Bay Surf Comp.
