Stage 4

Science Year 7 and 8

The Science course in Years 7 and 8 aims to give the students an appreciation of what science is and how scientists not only carry out research, but how we have achieved our body of knowledge over the millennia. The comprehension of our responsibility to be custodians of this fragile planet is explored and European and Indigenous viewpoints are compared when studying topics on environmental issues and formation of the Universe.

In Year 7, the following topics are studied:

  • Working as a Scientist
  • Why Classify?
  • Chemical Transformations
  • Rocks and Earth
  • Forces
  • Our Place in Space

In Year 8, these topics are extended through the study of:

  • Resource Management
  • Environmental Science
  • Our Chemical World
  • Blood and Guts
  • The Solar System

Assessment in Years 7 and 8 is across the form, with each student completing identical assessment tasks. This allows comparison of each students’ ability, and helps with the grading of classes for Years 9 and 10.

Assessment tasks are designed to complement the skills learnt in class and can take a variety of forms including: Knowledge and Understanding tests, practical/skills tasks, research tasks, ICAS Science competition and individual practical based Student Research Projects (SRP).
