The main aim of the HSIE department at St Edward’s College is to provide a platform for students to engage in learning, develop an open and informed mind, undertake the learning life journey and above all become active, informed and positive global citizens.

We encourage our students to take on the extra responsibilities as future community leaders in following in the Edmund Rice tradition of making the world a better place through action. For example our boys in Geography explore water management at Terrigal lagoon, the history students research past local ANZAC legends while in Commerce students are encouraged to construct videos on current business practices.

This aim is achieved through a rigorous program of subjects and activities in the Years 7-12. Classes are not streamed enabling all students the opportunity to engage with a wide diversity of people and in doing this challenge their way of thinking and communicating. All classes follow the Board of Studies Curriculum and are given assessments that challenge all students to extend their learning gain.

Classes are organised in stages 4-5 as semester units and all students are encouraged to enter into competitions such as the Simpson Prize in History or the Business Plan in Commerce and Business Studies.
