English

The aim of the study of English at St Edward’s College is to provide opportunities for all students to understand, use, enjoy and value the English language in its various textual forms and to become thoughtful, imaginative and effective communicators in a diverse and changing society.

English is a mandatory course that is studied substantially in each of Years 7–10 with at least 400 hours to be completed by the end of Year 10. This is a requirement for eligibility for the award of the School Certificate. The study of English at St Edward’s in Years 7–10 aims to develop students’ knowledge, understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the English language and to develop their skills as effective communicators.

Students develop their control of language by reading and viewing a range of texts and by writing imaginative, interpretive and critical texts with clarity and accuracy for a range of purposes and audiences. Students engage with and explore literature of past and contemporary societies, as well as a range of spoken, visual, media and multimedia texts.

Students learn to develop clear and precise skills in writing, reading, listening, speaking, viewing and representing. For example, in developing writing skills, students in Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) learn about sentence structures, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and spelling.

Students study a range of texts including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, films, radio, television, newspapers, the internet and CD-ROMs. The texts give students experience of Australian literature and insights into Aboriginal experiences and multicultural experiences in Australia, and experience of literature from other countries and times.

Students also study texts that give experience of cultural heritages, popular cultures and youth cultures, picture books, everyday and workplace texts, and a range of social, gender and cultural perspectives. Students experience Shakespearean drama each year, thus enhancing their appreciation and knowledge of this important component of English.

Students develop their skills, knowledge and understanding so that they can use language and communicate appropriately, effectively and accurately for a range of purposes and audiences, in a range of contexts. They learn to think in ways that are imaginative, interpretive and critical. They express themselves and their relationships with others and the world, and reflect on their learning in English.

The study of English is central to the learning and development of students in NSW and is the mandatory subject in the Stage 6 curriculum. The importance of English in the curriculum is a recognition of its role as the national language and increasingly as the language of international communication. Proficiency in English enables students to take their place as confident, articulate communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers and active participants in society.

English involves the study and use of language in its various textual forms, encompassing written, spoken and visual texts of varying complexity, including the language systems of English through which meaning is conveyed, interpreted and reflected.

The study of English at St Edward’s College enables students to recognise and use a diversity of approaches and texts to meet the growing array of literacy demands, including higher-order social, aesthetic and cultural literacy. This study is designed to promote a sound knowledge of the structure and function of the English language and to develop effective English communication skills. The English Stage 6 courses develop in students an understanding of literary expression and nurture an appreciation of aesthetic values. Through reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing experience, ideas and values, students are encouraged to adopt a critical approach to all texts and to distinguish the qualities of texts. Students also develop English language skills to support their study at Stage 6 and beyond.

In Stage 6, students come to understand the complexity of meaning, to compose and respond to texts according to their form, content, purpose and audience, and to appreciate the personal, social, historical, cultural and workplace contexts that produce and value them. Students reflect on their reading and learning and understand that these processes are shaped by the contexts in which they respond to and compose texts.

The study of English enables students to make sense of, and to enrich, their lives in personal, social and professional situations and to deal effectively with change. Students develop a strong sense of themselves as autonomous, reflective and creative learners. The English Stage 6 syllabus is designed to develop in students the faculty to perceive and understand their world from a variety of perspectives, and it enables them to appreciate the richness of Australia’s cultural diversity.

Catholic Ethos in English Years 7-12

The Catholic ethos is reinforced in all of the St Edward’s College English programs.

The Church’s teachings relating to our everyday dealings with others as Christians and living the faith as preached in the Gospels underpin the English teaching process, the content and the assessment in all English programs.

Students are guided through the concepts of fair and equitable justice, social justice and love for one another as taught in the Gospels through the study of appropriate texts.

Each teacher will:

  • Address values and attitudes which are consistent with the teachings of Jesus
  • Foster in students empathy and understanding of cultures and societies different from our own
  • Promote respect for individual freedom of conscience and level of moral development in each student
  • Affirm the values and teachings of Blessed Edmund Rice and to practice them as a member of the wider community
